All Mountain Tyres

I picked up a wheel set second hand (Mavic Cross Ride 26) and the guy threw in a pair of new Racing Ralph EVOs.
I mostly ride All Mountain (Majura, ACT for example). Are these going to be suitable or should I switch back to the Crossmarks i've been using?

Fail. Damaged my rear rim on an ill-timed gully jump.
Switched to a Minion/Ardent combo and haven't had any issues striking the rear rim so far.

So I strapped a pair of Rubena Kratos tyres on a couple of nights ago. 2.25 on the back is a bit skinny for the size, 2.4 up front is a beast! I think I'll put one out back too.

They were shit to mount tubeless using a floor pump compared to Maxxis TR, only *just* got the 2.4 to inflate.

...and then I blasted them all around Majura pines yesterday. On the bike, they're not bad! A few PRs on descents even rocking new tyres *and* some new, stiffer flat pedal shoes. I felt like I could have gone faster, despite bouncing a foot off the pedal a few times. Settled on about 27 psi in back and 20 up front, no burps, no worries.

I don't know if the sidewalls will hold up for as long as the Maxxis EXO stuff, but they feel a little more solid than specialized 2bliss. Definitely less prone to squishiness than a purgatory/captain combo I once had.

Anyway. New things. Not easy to mount but grippy so far - it's early days, it'll take some doing to swing me from the good old maxxis rubber, but I'm open.

Short update - beat hell out of them on a massively rocky descent today. So far unscathed and sidewalls intact :)

Have been running 27.5 Mountain Kings 2.4s which came stock on my bike, on Stans Flows. Great tyres for the dry, pretty ordinary in the wet...
Lots of volume and big tyres on Stand Flow rims.
felt like there was a little leap of faith especially on the rear when tilting the bike. Reminded me of old DH casing ST High rollers that I used to run... so went looking for some HR2's to try.
Switched to HR2's on the rear - huge improvement on grip, no more leap of faith. Honestly can't decide if there is more rolling resistance... probably more than less. But had more fun.

Got 30mm LB carbon rims. I was going to go DHF 2.3 Front, and HR2 rear.... but LBS only had Shorty's in stock. So I'm running 2.3 Shorty's front, and HR2 rear.
HUGE rolling resistance, but on the trails so much more fun. I'm not sure if I like the really square profile, and they look so much smaller than the Conit MK's.

Considering now it's dry to go 2.3 EXO TR 3C DHR or DHF front? keeping the HR2's rear.

But I feel like I'm over-tyre-ing myself? just trail riding.

EDIT: my favourite setup for dry trails around Vic have been 2.5 ST DHF front, and 2.35 Larsen TT's rear. But this was before 27.5 was available, and Larsen's don't come in 27.5

Canberra trail riding tyres....?

I live on the beaches in Sydney and usually run a 29er DHR2 front and rear or a DHR2 front and ardent back around here as it's pretty rocky and sandy. I've also got an ardent race, ardent 2.4, high roller 2 and an ikon 2.35 in the shed hanging up. I ride an old Yeti SB95 more like a trail bike than an XC bike.

Can anyone recommend me a good tyre combo for Stromlo and Majura at this time of year as I'm heading down for a couple of days later in the week?

I'd probably leave the DHR2 on the front, CBF changing that. If you're planning on putting in some bigger rides I'd maybe throw the ardent race or ikon on the back. You'll probably want the exo casing if you're planning on riding some of the rockier stuff over the back of Stromlo.

I ride with an Ikon rear and it's perfect. Minion or Hans Dampf front. Stromlo is loose and dusty at the moment as there hasn't been much rain. Mint conditions!

After 100km on the tomahawk rear it feels great. 3c exo helps, even hit the rim hard on a sharp edged ledge expecting a flat in the tube but kept going no issue.

No major wear, reasonably fast rolling and good grip leaned over.

Don't think I'll put the new ardent i got at the same time on again.

I'm hanging to get my tomahawk on, just waiting on my new wheels.

What were you running before it?

How's the braking and climbing traction?

Tomahawk replaced ardent, both great tyres but I feel the tomahawk has more climbing traction and lent over no sign of letting go. My local trails are sandy, mostly hard pack and rock. As for braking I can't tell the difference, both tyres have plenty of bite. You'll love it.

First rides on some decent trails last 2 days since changing to HR2 front and Ardent rear. Not overly impressed. I'm running 20 psi Front and 19psi rear.

Both rides were on trails I know well and have never really had traction issues. But I found the ardent in particular to really struggle holding on up dusty climbs that were not even that technical. Cornering I found the rear not too bad but the front seemed to drift far too easily and was a little unsettling.

That said I did log a few PRs so the rolling must be ok.

I'm thinking of giving a Minion a go up front with the HR2 out back. As its getting harder to find 26" versions What's the lightest minion option?

Specialized butcher control is the lightest minion option :behindsofa:.

I think I know what you mean about the HR 2, I've never tried one but I found the original HR very unpredictable.

Seeing as you didn't find the ardent too bad in corners you could try the 2.4 version on the front?? I hear they are huge volume and the side knobs are bigger than the smaller version.

DHR II is the lightest, by a smidge. Hard to go past the DHF though, it's so good specialised tried to copy it...
