Backhander to champ; Qantas spirit blasted

CAIRNS teenager Tracey Hannah may
be a world champion sportswoman and
patriotic Australian – but our national
airline could not care less.
The 18-year-old, three-times Austral-
ian downhill mountain bike champion,
last weekend won the world junior title
in Rotorua, New Zealand.
But, with other members of the Aus-
tralian team, she was forced to fork
out, on the spot, $600 in excess baggage
by Qantas officials to fly her bike over
the Tasman – despite protests from the
Australian team manager.
On the way back she was able to cut
the extra cost to $100 by sending the bike
next day via air cargo – still a shocking
backhander from Qantas which con-
stantly boasts its nationalistic spirit.
Hannah, whose elder brother
Michael came sixth in the men’s profes-
sional event at the titles, is supported
by her parents in her quest to become
the senior women’s champion and her
only sponsorship comes from Orange
Bikes, who paid for her airfares to the
United States in June.
“Every person who was with the
group had to pay excess baggage – I’d
say half the Australian team,” a still
angry Hannah said yesterday.
“They charged us $18 per kg extra,
and a bike would weigh just over 30kg.
Some riders had two bikes but I just
took one bike because I couldn’t afford
to take any more – I couldn’t afford to
pay that much extra for one.
“They said I could leave my bike be-
hind. I said ‘I’m going to the world titles
and I need it’. They didn’t care.
“The total weight of me (55kg), my
luggage and my bike would be less than
110kg yet the person standing next to
me in the line was 110kg by himself. It
doesn’t make sense.”
It was the one incident that left a
sour taste for the otherwise jubilant
Hannah, the petite blonde whose frame
defies her bulldog-like toughness and
high-speed skills on the bush slopes
– and whose favourite other pastime is
riding her motorbike.
She spent 21⁄2 months in the US from
June competing against America’s best
women and came first in the NORBA
American national series, beating
French woman Sabrina Jonnier, who
last weekend again took the world pro
title in New Zealand.
Despite being one of the first on the
track in Rotorua when the course was
muddy and slippery, a decided disad-
vantage against other girls who enjoyed
a harder more compacted track later in
the day, she finished 10th overall in the
senior women, but was winner of the
junior category.
Hannah admits she “sucked” when
she first took up the sport and soon
after was knocked unconscious and
broke her collarbone in a race. But now
she has the world at her feet.
Her parents, Helen and David de-
cided that if she worked hard enough,
they would pay for her world challenge
and she gave up her job as a “check-out
chick” to concentrate on improving her
riding. Now she is hoping to pick up
more sponsors and join brother Michael
on the elite professional circuit.

The film guy
That does suck rather badly. I just had a quick look on their site, which has a few pages on their site dedicated to their involvement in sport and how they support the community, the arts and youth.

Quite disappointing really.

Edit : I am sure that if enough of a stink is raised, they will issue some pissweak marketing speak apology in attempt to save face by their PR department.

Bloody hell....you'd think the staff at QANTAS would have seen it as an oppurtunity to get some good press at least!
The rules for baggage are there for a reason but when we have people representing our country and winning, surely there would be a bit of generosity from QANTAS. I guess not....
I sent them some feedback, I doubt they'll reply.
Virgin is the preferred airline for MTBer's anyway....

On a side note, do other proffesional athletes get slammed with excess baggage? ie Cricket teams, Olympic teams, Rugby etc...

They would get slugged, but what they do, is POOL their luggage.

25 people touring multiplied by 30kg (or whatever the limit is, I don't know) equals 750kg luggage for the whole team. Some will be under, some over, but works out pretty well usually, or a small cost per person.

I've done it many times for Rugby.

Tough break but you should know better.

I know it sucks to pay excess baggage but read the ticket people it is clearly laid out.
The big red rat and other airlines are in the business of making money for their shareholders, they are not a charity.
Most of the riders going to the worlds should have traveled alot with bikes before and should know air freight is expensive. Big bro Mick should know this and so should the Aussie team and coaches.

By which I mean, How come golfers are allowed over the baggage limit. Also Qantas club members, Business and First (wankers) Class and platinum and above frequent flyers are all allowed anything up to (and sometimes over) 30kg. Now I do agree with qantas' policy of having set baggage limits for people but why do they have to be based on money spent? surely if airlines wanted a level playing field they'd go by personal weight!

Just kidding! (just)

Ok if you pay more you get more benefits. Fair enough! But golf equipment is regularly excused from excess baggage fines in spite of the fact that the combined weight of a hell of a lot, let's call them most golfers and their clubs can be over 200kg! (apart from the skinny ones)

Anyway I digress from my original points:

Golfers get large baggage allowances yet other sports (not just MTB - ask any serious scuba diver if you can get them to stop looking at the floor mumbling) are stuck with the shitty 20kg rule.

Tracey Hannah is pretty much at the top of her game internationally and Qantas are really running the risk of having a local media backlash a la 'Spirit of Australia Airline Rips Off Young Aussie International Superstar!'

To be honest all it takes is a few emails to the tabloids on a slow news day...

Bit of a fallacy as most people can't really contol their body weight (within a short time span) but they can control the amount of luggage hence the 20KG limit.

I wouldn't blame Qantas for enforcing the weight excess penalty, there are only so much that the check-in managers can do at the desk. If every person come to them and ask to have the penalty waiver, than whats the point of having the rule. Yes, Qantas likes to maintain the image of an Australian sport supporter, but reality is that its the media unit that determines who the airline supports, not the staff at the checkin desk.

End of the day, they will provide you with benefits if you can give them something back like press exposure, a big ask for MTBing.:(

Qantas isn't intrested in the athlets, they just want to fly the spectators to and from events.

Virgin have got their shit together

Virgin Blue said:
Each Item of sporting equipment will individually represent 5kgs of a guests free total baggage allowance, irrespective of the actual weight of the item.

For example, a bicycle that weighs 10kgs will represent 5kgs of the guests’ free baggage allowance. If the free baggage allowance is 20kgs, this leaves 15kgs for other items

Now that is a meal for Champions!! :p

Seriously though, airlines like Qantas suck when it comes to baggage limits, they are far too tight. I remember taking my bike all the way to Finland for absolutely nothing!

Should anyone care to share their World Cup feedback with Qantas, you can do so via their feedback page.

http://qantas.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/qantas.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

Customer feedback is important. They won't know if no-one tells them.
I gave them my feedback when they pinged a bunch of us for excess when flying with bikes earlier this year - even though the ticket information claims that they should be allowed as normal checked luggage.

Yeah, fat lot of good that did - they brushed it off. Fucktards.

Won't be flying with Qantas again if I can help it.

Except you can't take liquids on board anymore. So you are stuck with a dry potty mouth.

I just brought 3 bikes back from Canada for $85US on United. For other reasons, such as fear of crashing in a very dodgy plane, I'll never fly them again. But I was surely pleased with the baggage situation.

I will never fly Qantas with a bike. As people have already said, Virgin is the bike friendly airline.

Fark I work for Qantas and I prefer to fly Virgin when I've got my bike along. Plus their hostie girls are better IMO.
