Im looking at each of the following for trail and cross country for an xl rider. . . . . . Wats important beyond performance is service and quality for that brand
Your advice is appreciated

1 x giant anthem 29
2 x trek fuel ex 7 29
3 x scott spark 940
4 x norco sight a3 29
Anthem 29 geometry is about 5 years behind the times!
Norco Sight is more enduro isn’t it? Norco Optic is a nice trail bike that would hold its own in xc

Spark is more XC oriented - Genius is Trail oriented. New Spark models have increased travel in Spark to 120mm - up from 100mm. Genius is 150mm
Genius is all round beefier - 34mm forks not 32mm etc. I'm having way more fun on the Genius than I had on the Spark - but then I don't race much.

Here is another option - the Polygon - price is good and they have a 14 day "try & return if not satisfied" policy - so not much risk if you don't like the bike:

Flow have an overview here:

And BikeRadar first ride review here:

I'm not affiliated - but they looked to be quite good value when checking options fort a mate (who ended up buying a Scott, as it turn out!)

"We’re so confident that you’ll love our extensive range of bikes, that we’ll let you ride one as your own for a full 14 days and if you don’t like it, simply e-mail us at sales@bicyclesonline.com.au and we’ll pick it up from you, free of charge! Just make sure you keep the box so it can be re-used to send it back. Click here for more information. "

Has a juicy midrange
The Anthem 29er is built as a pretty dedicated XC race-oriented rig. The Anthem 27.5 is a better option for a bit more XC/trail crossover bike; a bit more suspension travel, 130F, 110R vs the 29's 100F, 90R, and a slacker head for a bit more descending stability, without sacrificing too much agility.

Man it's getting hard to pick a ride when the manufacturers can't keep a well established model name in one category.

I like Scott bikes. The new Spark geometry & travel makes it a good all-rounder & the 3 stage lockout will help a lot with climbing

I see that Spark 940 are on significant discount from some retailers right now -

If you're in Melbourne check this at $1300 off RRP

I'm 6'3" 90kg with long arms & legs - I am happy on a Scott Large frame so you may not need XL. Have had a Spark & currently on a Genius.
Hi Rossm

What model genius are you currently riding and would you recommend it? I am similar height and weight to you.

I'm on the 2017 Genius 700 Tuned. I would not normally have bought this build level, but the price was way too good to pass up at 40% discount. It was used by store owner for (supposedly) a 200km ride then sold as "demo". It looked brand new when I got it - not a scratch - not quite like that now!! However the Eagle drive train is simply fantastic, the Kashmina coated shocks & dropper reliable (140mm front, 130mm rear when open), and despite the general opinion of "no love" for SRAM brakes, the Guide Ultimates modulate well, have been reliable and have more than enough stopping power for me. The Plus (2.8") tyres are a revelation - especially round here where we get a lot of deep sand on the tracks in summer. SO MUCH traction for climbing and bite on cornering is great. I'm seriously thinking of getting a set of light weight Industry Nine 29er wheels, as the bike is compatible with 650b & 29. Oh - and I am a fan of the Scott TwinLock - I use it all the time. Locked out on tarmac & good gravel (I ride 6km uphill from home to first track on tarmac), middle setting for climbing/flat grades & open for descents.

The latest Genius has revised suspension geometry, longer travel & slacker head angle. Reviews are good:

In short - absolutely recommend it - I'm having SO much fun on it.

Awesome thanks for your the feedback Rossm,

Been looking at the 2018 Scott Genius 920/940
Both are very well priced from TBE here in Perth. The components are awesome for the price too.

Pretty hard to go past such a tech and versatile bike definitely seeing as you can run 27.5 or 29 inch tyres. I would be keen to see how your 700 rides with the 29 inch wheel set.

Cheers

Well I went and did it bought a new bike Genius 940 2018 too good to go past! I’m pretty hard on gear so went the ally option and not too concerned with weight of frame. Brakes look like they could do with an upgrade ( rotors mainly) and it does have a busy front end with all those cables but an awesome bike none the less! Will run it all for a while and decided on upgrades later!
