get it plated

Take my advice mate and get it plated right now.The doctors told me that mine would heal up fine and 3 years on its still broken and have the bone "tenting" thru the skin.Just do it!!

i broke mine 6 weeks ago today so im still recovering, i can do every day stuff except go riding :/ but i can't really remember what my break looked like since i don't have a copy of the xray but it looked something like that and they just left it and its just healed together and i have a very noticeable lump there. the doctor said they only do surgery if its a 3cm overlap with the bone or if its putting pressure on the skin so sounds like you might be getting surgery.
heres footage of my crash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCpw8-Es0WQ you can here the bone snap

Is back!
the surgery is risky because there's a nerve loom running under the collarbone that feeds the front of your arm. see a good physio or osteopath, and ask about slinging it to pin your arm to your ribs, maybe? i did that with my son's collarbone (took him to our practitioner after i assessed it and had him x-rayed :)) his healed really well, even tho he was back on his bike within days, riding one-handed the bugger!

second opinions are always good. some doctors are more cluey than others.

heal soon, dude.

Both of mine looked like that , non union. The most recent one was plated straight away and has healed well. The first one never healed , so 3 years after the break I had surgery on it. A bone graft was required and I'm 7 weeks post surgery now. Getting xrays tomorrow and seeing the specialist this week. Its healing slower than the fresh break obviously and still giving some pain even now. I have some numbness in the area from the surgery affecting the nerves , but IMO its worth it.

If you want to get it plated , do it asap. There are risks but your options are to leave it and hope it knits or put up with it being broken forever. Good luck with it mate.

that looks pretty similar to mine dude, except mine was on the left. Sound like sort of the same situation too. Bail midair to flat from at least 4metres onto my head/ shoulder.
Accept I was upside down :p

Agreed. I've broken mine 2.5 times now, first time I had it plated and it healed fantastically. Then I broke it again with the plate in and bent the plate. It began to heal but 6 weeks later the plate gave way and I had to have a new one put in. I've had two plates and if I could go back I would get a plate again in a heartbeat. Currently its nearly been 5 weeks since the op.

Surgery is not as risky as it used to be. They used to commonly plate it on top (strongest, where my plate is currently) but now days often plate it on the front, as there is a large vein running under the collarbone, and if they screw through that you bleed and die. To avoid risk my doctor didn't put any screws in at the innermost part of the collarbone (the high risk area) and the plate sticks out into my skin a bit now. It hurts if its bumped but otherwise its fine.

One thing to keep in mind is the bone is probably easier to break with a plate in there then without one. The plate makes the bone stiffer, so it doesn't spring to absorb impacts. This is what happened with mine the second time around. Like spinner after both surgery's there is some numbness in the skin around the collarbone. This is from the nerves in the skin stretching over the metal and no longer being as sensitive.

If I remember later I'll upload the X-rays. But if you aren't happy with your doctors opinion you can always seek another one.

i'm in Rehab with the Physio at the momment. But the collar bone is the worst bone to break, not because it hurts like a bitch, but the recovery process. I dunno for other people but, i got out of my sling 5 weeks ago and i still do not have full mobility in the arm. Yes if its a bad fracture you should get surgery incase if the bones don't heal, if they don't heal worst case scenario is you need to get a bone graft from another part of your body to re stimulate the bone growth.

NO PAIN NO GAIN!:cool::cool:

You are mad not having it externally fixated.
I broke mine similar to yours 2 years ago. If you are not having the surgery due to wanting to win the largest cock competition well those with smaller cocks will soon be laughing at you! That broken clavicle, will compound through the skin and the risk of infection is then your biggest worry and infection pain from a staph infection in the bone will be significantly greater than the pain that you are experiencing now. Yes others are right as far as their is a significant nerve/blood supply (Brachial plexus) transecting that region, but once the clavicle begins with bone remodelling (healing) there is a risk of entrapment of nerve in the healing. On top of this the shoulder will be significantly shorter, due to the malunion of the clavicle compared to its original length which will lead to movement compromises in the glenohumeral joint (GHJ), leading to GHJ instabilities, headaches and the inability to fully utilise the GHJ to its full potential.

Mate do yourself a favour and see the specialist, he will have you in for surgery ASAP

good luck

you need to get it fixed up ASAP or your gonna put your self in a lot of pain. Just remember when docters talk to you they tell you the worste case scenario.

I would still advise getting surgery if it looks like its trying to poke through. Mine was more overlapped than yours but I wouldn't endure that pain. My shoulder only hurt for about two days, and 3 weeks later I could do chinups.

I did mine really similar to that about 4 months ago, all orthopedic surgeons I saw advised against surgery so I didn't, even now it is fairly painful at times and it has been a while since I did it, the bone has joined back together but there is still a bit of a step in the connection of the bone if that makes sense, the surgeons said it was close to looking like it was going to stick out of the skin but not close enough to get surgery, I guess the bone is still healing though and see how it goes. Yours does look fairly bad though mate in terms of risk of breaking through the skin. Good luck with yours and make sure you get some second opinions from different doctors

100% exactly the same as what i did to mine... was in the hospital and doctor said go home let it heal and see the specialist. A week later I went to the specialist and the first words out of his mouth were lets plate it....after having a serious injury before breaking my collar bone and have bolts and rods in my femurs I new that having it plated was the best thing to have it heal.. a week later I had it plated with 7 screws and a plate..within two weeks i was back on the bike.. a total of 5 weeks off the bike before i could do light riding again... getting it plated will allow you to use it, it will heal faster and will heal straighter as it wont move once the doctor has aligned it...get it plated mate.. you will be better off for it in the long run
