Plus gaming headsets, controllers and games... pretty much the lot! At this stage it looks like I'll be waiting for a healthy dose of Karma to kick his arse...

Wow dude, that sounds like a shit fight. Actually, it sounds very bloody suss is you ask me. Anyway, I'd make the claim and get your money back. Not everyone is going to win in situations like this.

Story doesn't sit right with me. I've read I a couple of times, and see more fault with Richard.... Even though I still don't understand it. :noidea:
Id be trying to get my money back in this situation. Sounds like he can soak it up better than you.

Yeah I'm not sure what to think, he said he was happy to talk to Police so I guess thats a start.
Steps have already been put in place with my bank so we'll see where that leads re money recovery.

More than likely, but then its not supposed to be particularly easy to create a bank account under someone else's name? :noidea:
It's very difficult to open an account in someone elses name.
You can do it over the phone with 100 points of fake ID faxed to the branch, but the account will remain frozen until you attend in person to sign the papers and accept the PDS personally.
PITA to do a bit of smalltime fraud.

Yeah, I would follow up with police just to make sure Richard's story is legit. He'll get cold feet or come up with some excuse not to follow though if not legit.

I reckon you also raise the idea of halving the loss too. Might not go over with him but worth a shot.

PS - thanks for publishing this. It's been a good reminder of being a bit more careful when trading.

This is such a great outcome, good to see a close knit community will rally around another burner over a few hundred bucks :)

So the bad guy gave you the good guy's bank account so you would pay direct into that for goods the bad guy didn't own and didn't have. You advise that payment has been made so bad guy then tells good guy money has been paid I am coming around to pick up the gear. Fair enough. Maybe. Still don't see how this is your problem. Get your money back.

THAT is a very sophisticated scam!

Really well thought through and uncommon for a crim - best of luck, and I think in future whenever trading with someone I might ask for an SMS of their drivers licence - at least you know who you are dealing with then.

I have started leaving visitor messages on the profile of people I have bought from because of the recent frauds. Just a quick two sentence all went well. I also always get mobile number and name.

Just a thought, isn't the ps4 a very internetty device with a definite identity? There may exist a way for the police to track him down if the original owner still has some details on the unit.

I'm on the get your money back bandwagon too, you've been swindled and you've found your money. Richard is the victim of an outright theft now and should be able to pursue it himself...

This Is what I'm thinkin can the ps4 serial # be traced to an IP when it goes online? As to whether the police bother is a different matter entirely

Thats a pretty well thought out scam - probably not the first time he's done it - it means that unless you manage to track down the PS4 Seller, nobody lays eyes on the crook (who knows or later becomes aware that he is a crook) - and even though you did manage to track down the PS4 seller, its a not insignificant period of time latter so his memory isn't super clear.

I'd wager the PS4 has been sold to somebody else in order to crystalise the ill-gotten gain (i.e. turn it into cash).

Crime converters/ hock shops/ second hand goods sellers are now required to get the ID of people who sell valuable objects to them... although I'd wager that the goods are being sold privately to avoid having to show an ID (he has shown himself to be relatively sophisticated crime wise)

If he was really smart, he'd advertise the PS4 equipment somewhere far away from the Gold Coast (i.e Western Australian Computer Game forums or something) and then post the product to really insulate himself from the transaction. However, that cuts into his profit, so I'd wager he probably sells it locally on something like gumtree.

The only really good chance you have to catch somebody running a scam like this is when they sell the PS4 to crystalise - because that has to be a legitimate transaction.

My uninformed speculation.

About 18 months ago I saw a bike I was interested in ,on gumtree , seemed a bit cheap , on the gold coast , we even spoke on the phone ,

He wouldnt post the bike until I transferred money, something didnt sit right with me, was nothing but a gut feeling,

I said I have a cousin who lives on the gold coast , Ill send him the money, he will call around with the cash and pick up the bike and organize postage,

He ceased all contact , I know the gold coast is a big place but i wonder if its the same guy .
