Contemporary trail building rant

Air-Ya-Garn can be rolled the whole way, its big if you hit it but nothing if you roll it.
thats what i liked about it.

The other trails have features that are harder to walk than ride if you have some skill.
ill have to take your word for it, air ya gon was the only black i did.

That said I have ridden fort william and had a crack at hollybank (the rocky portion of it) granted that was on a full dh bike so dont know how a 150/150 would handle a black/double black rocky trail with my fat ass on it.

I haven't ridden Cuddles yet but looking forward to it.
oh one thing. how come there's a lot of other trails that aren't mentioned on the main website or trail map that i can see? Have they just not gotten to it or just leaving it there as a surprise thing ?

Agreed. Worst thing about Derby was the trail signage and lack of readable and updated maps.

Cuddles is the only new trail there in about 3-4 years. The trail maps online are correct, also trailforks. Though we have spent over 50 days in Derby over 5 trips so there may be some in the memory. I can remember that the junction at the bottom of Flickety on the bald rocks used to be a bit confusing.

I suppose you could have hand cut singletrack for all of the trail networks, but you come up against a few issues.

1: It's all volunteer built, and therefore, takes forever to build, will vary quite a bit in quality as it's hard to find volunteers with good trail building experience. In the end you will quite likely have a poorly built trail, with tiny features, if you manage to get much built at all.
2: Get a contractor to hand build it. Yes, it would be significantly quicker, but compared to machine cut trail, it's still massively slower to build, plus it is very labour intensive and that would make it extremely expensive.

Places like Canada and the US have had a couple of decades of trail building in front of us, a way bigger population to pull from when it comes down to trail builders and some many very well established trail advocacy groups, like IMBA, NICA, TORCA, WORCA etc.

You look at an area of similar size in the US and compart to say Tasmania and it dwarfs the amount of trail we have. And that basically comes down to population and the time that they have been building trail. They do have a big amount of shared trail though.

One thing I think that Australia would benefit from is a nationwide trail advocacy body. An organization that can help source funding, give guidance to clubs and other not for profits that would like to develop new trails. Auscycling only cares about racing, so apart from local councils, there's not many organizations doing any big trail projects. Sometimes the problem with a council run project, is that the council employees aren't experienced in designing a trail network, so they rely totally on the trail building company, and don't always get the best outcome because of it due to that contractor not knowing the area like a local would. If you had a national advocacy body with state and regional groups, they could assist any government bodies or clubs wanting to build a trail network and provide advice on the best approach.

we're not all teenagers anymore.
Yeah. Most parks have some black gnar. Much of it is too hard for many of the people on this forum.

I've ridden World Cup at Stromlo once, slow, with SPD's, no dabs, on my Bronson, so I have the skill to ride that stuff, but It just wasn't fun. Last gnarly bit I tried to ride was Rough Choice and walked some of it. The teenager in me creeps further from my reality.

@Scotty T yeah I mean i'd like to hit more double blacks and in the past i have always preferred tighter, slower more technical/rougher tracks vs high speed groomed/semi groomed tracks but these days I am preferring more green/blue flow trails with more rollable features or, at least have it built like air ya gon where you can go as big or as small as you like.

Obviously the odd techy blue is nice, like kings wall or something like snig track but going down.

There'll always be a market for crazy double blacks and they should definitely be in a trail network and be as hard as possible but its gotta be the icing on the cake more than anything.

I broke my metacrpal bone in my hand last year or the year before on a black run. When I was in Launceston Hospital ( hand/arm section) getting it checked out I asked the specialist was MTBers their top causes of injuries " oh no he said there no 3" Those new electric scooters you can hire and see laying around was No1, building trade was no 2

Can see why scooters are number 1 when they can do 100kph... this meth-head wasn't even wearing a helmet:

When you've ridden a skateboard all your life you forget that for some people it's just not possible to balance on a moving platform, even with handles to hold.

Thankfully the meth-scooters are few and far between with most either legal 25km/h (still waaay too fast for some as per prev sentence) or 20mph (OS standard) which is 32km/h.

I've always made it a point to write 'line dancing' where it said 'Cause of injury:' on forms in hospital whenever i needed patching up - moto, skating, roadie or mtb.

Yep I discovered breaking the metacarpal bone is other wise known as the boxer breaks ie it is usually broken when you punch something. I couldn't understand why the medical people were asking me so many questions on how I broke it. Found out later they ask all these questions to find out if you broke it in a domestic violence dispute.

From now all injuries are due to gardening to hard.

I hired a few e-scooters around Germany - they're not particularly fast but dedicated bike lanes and bakeries being close by made them a very handy shopping tool!

Electric scooters are the preferred means of transport for most of the unsavoury types around here. Originally it was the cheap Chinese 2-stroke conversions on pushbikes, then electric motor conversions, now scooters. I'm ok with that though, the petrol powered bikes were pretty offensive when they blasted down the street at 2am on their way to do a deal.

I like the tracks where there are black features that are optional or at least a ride around exists that doesn't wreck the trail. On recent trip to PNW I rode Galbraith Mountain and although rode nearly all blacks there only a relative handful of very managable mandatory drops/chutes etc. There was plenty of tech, big gaps, rock rolls etc on offer but it wasn't essential to get to the bottom, very handy when you are riding everything blind and also because I was riding with my son who had only ridden once in 2 years. It's been a few years since I rode Derby but that is my memory of some of the trails there too, choose your own adventure style, feeling good hit it, feeling cautious ride around. Obviously really steep stuff that is not possible but a lot of trails you can.

Probably needs a cross-post the health & fitness thing, but just a tip, Eeee-scoots & nearby bakeries probably isn't a good mix if trying to lose weight. (Walk between bakeries, dammit!!)
