Hi all,

I am trying to track down Benny Page's album "Turn Down The Lights."

Anyone know where I can source this?
Turn down the lights came out as a single w/ marcus visionary soundbwoy burial back in 06. I have that but as far as I know he has never released an album.

I want to know about real 90s jungle. I've kinda stumbled across some stuff but I'm a bit overwhelmed to really delve into it. Any seminal singles, EPs, LPs or compilations I should consider?

Also, Youngsta is an incredible DJ. I completely understand why there's a 500+ page thread on dubstepforum devoted to him.

I'm sure masone will jump in, otherwise I will later... although the 90's is a long period... there was much change from year to year.
LTJ Bukem mixmiag mix is stellar but that represents a particular style.

Which kinda leads me to another question... where is the line drawn between jungle and dnb? I originally thought that jungle referred just to the stuff with heavily chopped up amen breaks, dragged out and pitch altered snares, that kinda thing, but I've seen some really smooth stuff referred to as jungle so I'm a bit clueless. And I hate being clueless, so I really need an educating.

edit: listening to that LTJ BUKEM mix now on youtube. Enjoying it heaps.

Well, it was Breakbeat Hardcore.... which lead to Jungle. Then there was Darkside and Intelligent (that Bukem stuff) and Happy Hardcore. Then it moved to be Drum and Bass. D n B around 94 / 95 was either dark or intelligent or jump up ( the more ravey stuff, comedy basslines)... Now, IMO there is Electro, Deep, Heavy and Cheese.

Edit : to answer your question, it is all about timeframes. Oldschool there was jungle, these days "jungle" if it is new, refers to choppy amen rave stuff.

Xilent - Ultrafunk EP.
My kind of epic.

I believe dubstep (and related sub genres) can go beyond the whole 1D "wub-a-dubba" sound.

But as long as "brostep" is still kicking in the mainstream, I'm sure our ears will be filled with that dribble.

Good example of something that is definitely not complete shite.

anyone else finding dubstep one dimensional with a very short use by date....
The garbage they play on the radio? For sure.

Dubstep? No way. RYDA's got it right.

This is one of my favourites

In a way, you just summed up every single genre.

Thats how & why, sub-genre's are made.

By the mention of use by date, what do you mean?

If you're referring to the mainstream, then by all means! Let that shit die out.

*I bet there are more avenues of dubstep you haven't listened to, even though this thread exists and is being kept alive by like 6 people, posting mostly old UK styled dubstep artists.

I don't really know any producers that are still making that kind of stuff. After the whole brostep thing happened, it really went in two different directions. One being the super dark, minimal and heavy sound (know by some as the "dungeon sound"), with artists like kryptic minds, sp:mc, V.I.V.I.C and a few more. The other being the super tearout, electro/complextro stuff like skrillex, etc.

I think some of skream's "skreamizm" stuff is still keeping similar to that sound you posted.

Also, that fabriclive37 mix (along with watching stuff from skream's debut lp on youtube) was pretty much my first exposure to dubstep (some point around year 11 or 12 for me i think). I'm gonna listen to it tonight for some nostalgia vibes, cheers for posting it.
