It's 3 days pumps money into the economy and...
And it would be a massive boost o the local Canberra economy for the week.
The Exxon Valdez oil spill pumped a lot of money in the Alaskan economy, due to the massive cleanup. Therefore it might be good to continually spill oil into the sea (and clean it up).

Just because some event brings money into an economy does not make it a good thing.

Uh oh, I can see a dispute between the people who don't buy into the "things that mankind do are ruining the planet" and the "I must buy solar and ride a fixie" brigades. Do you think the dinosaurs gave two hoots about the state of the planet in 2,000,000 years? I bet they cruised around looking after their own business, enjoying what they had and stamped their big feet on the heads of stupid dinosaurs.
Cars are awesome. They should be celebrated by every walk of life.

Live in Canberra by any chance? Kind of know how you feel, living in Tamworth going to be inundated with Hicks and feral Utes cause of the country music festival....
I think it would be no contest. I would rather vomit blood than go to the Tamworth country music festival.

ANYTHING is a good thing in a place as dull/grey as Canberra!

Thats completely different in my eyes. Of course an oil spill is devastating. Familys and car enthusiats visiting and spending money in a town is a good thing and not affecting the oceans, animals, planet.... The power consumed to run the data centres Aircon and keep us online on these websites would be far worse in a day. There is only maybe 20-30cars cruising around at one time and only one doing a burnout on the pad at a time. Not going to argue as everyone has there view and I would be biased being brought up around old cars. My parents newest is still a 1969 Id say thats freindly to the environment. Its a V8 also but gets the same milage as a new car except maybe sitting at the lights minus manufacture of a new car.

The nats have changed direction over the last few years..No wet t shirt show and a few other things to make it more family friendly.. I used to go every year in the 90's and it was boguns and rednecks (similar demographic to Bathust actually). Lots of tits out(men and women)! and it seemed to be a big pressure relief for alot of people. Def no political correctness there !!

The cars are incredible, so much time and effort and money goes into these cars.

You only have to put up with it for 4 days.....

No ones mentioned tits yet, Whats the go?
No more stripshows

Personally, I'm not a fan of the Summernats, or more specifically I'm not a fan of the fans of the Summernats, but it's only a few days and it gives me something to whinge about. The cars are great, the car owners are generally great and are really passionate about their cars, but the great unwashed who come down looking to get smashed, abuse the general public, and leave their rubbish all over the place can get stuffed. Over the next few days I can look forward to breathing in lots of tyre smoke, having large amounts of abuse heaped on me for no reason other than I ride a bicycle, and having some numbnut try to race me at every set of lights when I'm on the motorbike, awesome.

I like cars and there are many aspects of the Summernats that are cool. But the event does attract a certain type of muppet that can't drive past a cyclist without yelling out some incomprehensible crap or otherwise demonstrating some congenital small penis syndrome. Its particularly sad when they do this around kids that are riding. I don't know in what universe anyone would think that giving a kid riding on a bike path a scare would have any merit but its almost like some sort of sport when the Nats are in town.

Dinosaurs were not conscious and sentient beings with the ability to manipulate their environment in the same ways that humans can.

I was pointing out that the "it benefits the economy" argument only counts the hits (benefits) and not the misses (the costs).

True mate. And agree with others there are a lot of twats that go. As much as they try to clean up the event I think it will be hard to stop them unfortunately. It was pretty crazy back when I went in 2004 I think it was and I was only 18. We used it to visits a lot of other attractions and actually quite liked Canberra.

summer nats isn't a car show its a bogan parade! Car shows consist of nice cars, awesome cars, cars you cant afford, cars no one can afford, well engineered cars that are designed to be fast. Summer nats is full of commodores and other shit cars that have no useful purpose at all, if you really wanted to waste some tyers go buy a set and set them on fire in your back garden, its essentially the same thing.

There is nothing I hate more than bogans.

I go down to Summernats, have done for at least 5 years.

I totally appreciate the trouble and nuisance that must effect the locals for what would be at least a fortnight. There is obviously no point what so ever in debating the event, it is what it is to be honest, a bunch of blokes and female attention whores (in the most part) getting drunk and generally having a cracker of time if that's your thing.

But to say the people displaying their cars don't have serious money invested and aren't show cars is totally off the mark. I come from a circuit racing back ground and Summernats (show/burnouts) isn't my scene, but there is certainly serious money and heart time pumped into high quality show cars and performance cars at the event.

Plus, the local strip joins do a smashing trade during the period... If that counts for something...??? Guys ???

PS. I'm not a Bogan (ie... No Tats, No JB, No Singlet, Not a Tradie...)

I don't see an issue with it, I respect others interests as we would expect them to respect the fact we ride bikes.

Must be a slow news day.........

See my new website - summernatswithitsballsremoved.wankergreenie.com.au for details of this major new event to be held at the Mugga Lane tip next year.

It's going to be fabtanulous with only electric cars powered by 30m high wind generators allowed to compete. Burn-outs will be strictly limited to generator failures confirmed as "unexpected" by 13 independently unemployed environmental scientists. All tits and other offensive images, plus absolutely all sounds will be forbidden.

It's time we took this city back from the bogans, so we will be having this wonderful, revelation of an event in competition with the summer nats.

We need your support to get this event off the ground like a hippy girl's tits. Please register as a friend on our Browneyebook.com site to receive information on many other enlightening international events, links to cheap, personal-jet transport, accommodation, casino deals and extraterrestrial travel.

Peace on and love your planet like it and we all love you

im sorry, but no!..a family car covered in shiny bits with an aeroplane engine stuffed under the bonnet is not show car material!..hell, why not even paint it bright f..ing purple, that will add street cred?.
my wife's uncle builds hotrods from the ground up, manufactures everything that he can't get original or modified- i used to be into the classic pommy small fords, they were fun..but this bolt on perfomance/shiny bits, any muppet can do that, you just have to sell enough illegal contraband to fund it!...dial a part

Wouldn't be able to stand the Nats anymore. I've found that my ability to tolerate westies and bogans is inversely proportional to my age.

I've been meaning to wander down to the Deni ute muster one year and have a look at that. I reckon it'd be more fun.
