has an accommodating arse
so what's this all about?
They are just pissie they may have to start paying for content that makes them a crap ton of money.
so what's this all about?
But they're not content producers? And they already pay the media companies? Feels like a Gerry Harvey style law...They are just pissie they may have to start paying for content that makes them a crap ton of money.
Yeah Google and Gerry Harvey while both unethical are in very different leagues. This article gave me some good insight into the issue. But they're not content producers? And they already pay the media companies? Feels like a Gerry Harvey style law...
I was liking the NewsCorp to Gerry Harvey, not google. Complain to the government when your business is uncompetitive.Yeah Google and Gerry Harvey while both unethical are in very different leagues. This article gave me some good insight into the issue.

As much as i struggle to sympathise with google, I suspect it’s safe to say they are less likely to be shifty and greedy than newscorp...To me it just looks like a ploy to get Google to just not list Aus news sites in searches and media feeds. This will basically strengthen newscorp as they no longer have to compete with independents for clicks as you'll need to know the media outlet you're searching for. Or people use bing to search for Australian articles I dunno.
Ha ha ha ha ... "Free market", good one @HaakonAs much as i struggle to sympathise with google, I suspect it’s safe to say they are less likely to be shifty and greedy than newscorp...
These legislation always seem odd coming from proponents of free markets.
Yep and that paper above lays out how they did it, it's disturbingly brilliant.im not convinced i was born with any non cynical bones - my mother once described me as having been a cynical child. wasnt sure how to take that...
Free markets are a myth, but the conservative like to promote the idea to keep the peasants working whilst passing laws to socialise the losses and privatise the profits.
Totally fair point to make. How does giving newscorp the key to their algorithum and giving profits to newscorp for driving traffic to their site fix any of whats happening to the independant?i figure it’s about the fact the big 2, fb & giggle are making a few billion in earnings here, but paying a far lower percent of tax than a middle income earner, yep i know our system isn’t perfect, and at present they mostly have legitimate reductions, but still it’s a hard ask,
also people who are legitimate journalists i presume are finding it hard to make a buck, newspaper’s/ were the traditional employer, they are declining, so many regional papers going under, people like to click on g]fb/gomel for free to read stories, prob only fair if you are writing stuff, taking pics you get paid for your work
newscorp are’ looking after themselves, but the govt is prob also looking at fb paying 17m in tax in 2019, google about 40m, then looking at the 4B turnover and thinking they’ll increase their coffers, we’ll take 30 yrs at least to recover from covid, also score some cheap political, points with the avg punterTotally fair point to make. How does law that gives the decision to google to either pay everyone, or pay only those that generate it enough income to break even or profit, benefit the independant?
It doesn't it will drive traffic and viewership only to the already established publishers of news media.
This will not turn out well for the independants.
17m in tax is better than newscorp which pays no tax.newscorp are’ looking after themselves, but the govt is prob also looking at fb paying 17m in tax in 2019, google about 40m, then looking at the 4B turnover and thinking they’ll increase their coffers, we’ll take 30 yrs at least to recover from covid, also score some cheap political, points with the avg punter
Umm. And why are no regional newspapers and why is there no diversity in media? Oh yes, that’s right - newscorp.i figure it’s about the fact the big 2, fb & giggle are making a few billion in earnings here, but paying a far lower percent of tax than a middle income earner, yep i know our system isn’t perfect, and at present they mostly have legitimate reductions, but still it’s a hard ask,

This is not the way to tax google. They should tax its ad revenue directly. This is just the libs looking after their mates, no two ways around it.
This isnt the same as the mining tax.
