Just announced Holden no longer manufacturing cars in Australia beyond 2017.

Great day for Abbott to announce he's getting a BMW as his Government car.

At least the govt won't be piling money into a sinking ship anymore!

So now the govt can now rescind the excise on import duties and luxury car tax right?

Its unfortunate, but I expected it really. Australia has very high labour costs and now an uncompetitive exchange rate. And Australians have not been buying Falcons or Commodores in nearly the numbers we used to.

I wonder how long Toyota will be manufacturing here?

I'm sooooo torn. So many other industries are subsidised a hell of a lot more than the auto industry. The job losses will probably cost the country more than the subsidy ever could. That said, I don't want to prop up a company that is taking the profits os, and it's market in Australia is less than a blip on the company radar.
Socialism has its advantages, buy into the company rather than prop up? :noidea:

I work in a factory in Melbourne. it is in no way connected to the car industry but this is gutting news. This will have massive ramifications for all sorts of businesses large and small.

While i am not in favor propping up a company that builds cars no one wants it is a very sad day for Australian manufacturing. With the closure of Holden and Ford Toyota will follow soon as there will be no economy of scale.

This sucks.

I think I heard on radio the other day that the Australian branch of GM is less than 2% of its company.
Whatever the outcome, government will look bad.

I feel sorry for the folks who'll be out of work above all else. The bigger picture in this situation is a massive problem as it sets the guideline for other stuff manufactured in Australia. I work for a company that sells a lot of expensive stuff made in Australia and I can tell you that this frightens me. One day the whole show could .......just........stop.

Sad news, its the smaller component companies that supply Holden I feel sorry for.

These are the job losses you never hear about........ just because they dont work in any of the plants directly, doent mean they wont be affected!

I dont know too much history about Holden or Fords sales model (I'm relatively new to Australia) but surely the trend of the Europeans buying smaller, more fuel economic cars should have rang bells for Holden and Ford to ditch building the gas guzzling tanks and plan to build smaller, more economical versions of GM and Fords line up?

Which is why Holden started making the Cruze here - exactly what you are saying.

Why?

Any current government would be criticised either way GM's decision went.
  • Damned for not supporting jobs if Holden closes shop.
  • Damned for throwing more billions of dollars to support a multi-national subsidiary which is uneconomical.

And regardless, it is GM's decision whether they stay or go, not the government.

GM attempted to bring Opel to Australia unsuccessfully. It was a relatively unknown brand and that never helps sales. Surely GM/Holden could have put their brain to use and manufacture Holden branded Opels here based on the euro model?

I looked at the cruze when I was buying a new car, and quickly dismisses it on many levels. If it had the looks and build of an Opel Astra I would have considered it more.

Agreed, if they had done the rebadged opel trick of a few years ago sales would have been much better, instead they rolled out crappy Daewoo shite time after time after time.

On one hand its sad that an icon will leave however on the other, why should i care about 2500 jobs, Telco's, QANTAS, Banks have all sacks many thousands and the Government didnt provide a single handout.

Its time for this country to stop looking at low skilled manufacturing as a industry base and instead invest in high tech industries. Pity i doubt the Rabbit government has the brain capacity to understand high tech when it thinks Copper is the broadband future.

Sanity is not statistical
So in 1 day General Motors has replaced their CEO with a Female, the US Government has sold off it's entire stake in GM and Holden Aus announces shutting it's doors...

There's big things afoot...

Yep, it's called going under due to failure to remain competitive. Why continue to prop up a company that has accepted failure and government bailouts around the globe as a core management plan?
Let them succeed with failure and the competitive players in the market will sort the rest out.

It was going to happen eventually.

It's rediculous to expect the country to bail out a company for a few thousand peoples jobs. It's harsh to say that i know, i have 2 mates that actually work in the plant, but the country cannot afford to keep propping it up. The workers have known this for a few years too, its no real surprise for them.

The industry is way cheaper overseas, and cheaper labor.

It's a sad time for all.

And the free trade thing with Korea would seal their fate completely.

It's sad that such atrocious cars are allowed to be sold in Australia. .. Great Wall, etc...

Shouldn't be able to buy a car with less than an ancap rating of four stars... The fifth one I don't care about. .. pedestrians. Lol
