that's quite a bit of elevation per lap, if you're new to 24 hour events as a team that could end up being a slog if you aren't fit enough, go too hard early and/or don't eat enough carbs to get you through. remember the AM hours is where you're really on your own, spooky, lonely so don't want fatigue undermining your ride. Once all riders have been out you'll have a good estimate of each lap time so you can get to start line with time to spare.

Rider Order - how to get a smooth transition with no time loss:

Work out what its going to take you per lap - so fast guys are 20kph average, mid-15-20, slow 10-15kph. You can then draw up a running list with estimated start times/finishes. Always write in last rider's time, that's up to the returning rider to do.

Looking after next rider:
so rider 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, assign a helper to each next rider, so out goes rider 1, rider 3 ensures rider 2 is ready, out goes 2, rider 3 does a quick check of 1, now rider 4 ensures rider 3 is ready to go. This means, water bottle, chain, tyres, escort to line and keep them focused. They then escort returning rider doing quick chain lube, tyre check and most importantly hydration, food into them.

If you have this system going, it will pay off big time in AM hours when the rider helper gets rider up and ensures they're ready.

The steed?

What are people riding?

I'm assuming that the elite will be on 100mm/HTcarbon race weapons, but everyone else?

Does the average punter prefer the dually?

I'll be on my trail bike (due to limited choice) which feels a bit old school now days, with my 125mm 26" Dual Sus. (Santa Cruz Nickel)
ditched the dropperpost, swap to lighter wheelset/tyre, squeeze bit more air in sus, cross fingers.

My first mont too, kinda a last minute move, and I'll be grabbing something that's handy, probably a 140mm AM/Trail machine unless I can get my hands on a more suitable demo bike :p

Definitely sounds like I need to get warm gear sorted. Does anyone use wind breakers / shell jackets? I use one on the roadie but have never had need for it off road.

as for me.... I'll be riding my burly SB66 and ditching the dropper for a thomson masterpiece, and swapping the front Hans Dampf to a Racing Ralph

Use a jacket for the transition, and maybe an under layer vest under your jersey (or 2 jerseys) for night - transition standing around is where you get cold, so go down with a jacket and hand it off to the incoming rider to take back to camp.

You perhaps haven't ridden off road in Canberra at 5AM in April then. Could be sub zero. Lowest April temp for Canberra is -4.3 (albeit late April). I know what I'd be bringing with me ...

I rode my 6am-ish lap last year with merino base layer and arm warmers and it was a very mild Mont last year. Jackets, beanies, full gloves are a must in the bag.

after getting well and truly off track on my recon ride this morning I decided to see if I could import that gpx file into the Runtastic MOUNTAIN BIKER app that I run on my iphone. Turns out I could - so to save you the excursions/detours I had today just search for "mont 2014" in the routes menu if you are running the app.

If you're not then its a free download for the app store (iphone and android - don't know about windows phone)

Last year the Mont weather was perfect, but I learnt my lesson about canberra March/April weather in the couple Monts before that, previously it was last a sparrow when we had mild weather. Thus I bring every warm piece of riding gear I own.. as well as a very toasty warm jacket, a beanie and some decent warm gloves.
A team jacket (any large old warm jacket) or an old blanket also is useful for waiting at transition and swapping off with the guy coming in as they will get cold very fast.
From what I can gather, the track is going to be ALL TIME! this year.

For info ...

Anyone who didn't get an entry in (and thus aren't getting the emails reminding them), the dating service has quite a few teams looking for riders.
Can I find a girlfriend using this dating service?

First Mont for me too. Just purchased some of the cheapo CREE night lights which coupled with my HID torch (that I'll cable tie to my helmet), should cover me for the night riding.

Shots of vodka?
First mont for me too..

I've got a couple of thermal underlayers, Jersey and bib, arm warmers, winter gloves and a buff for my face/neck.

What are people doing for tire set up? I'm running 2.1 rocket Ron/thunder burt. But will probably bring a nobby nic if it gets wet and rotate the ron to the back.

I'm feeling pretty organised gear wise, just got to make sure I can ride now.. :D

Kowen - will it drain, will it be muddy

Any locals that can offer advice on track condition and whether it will be muddy, slimey or ok in their opinion?

Have you seen the forecast ?

If we get 30 or 40mm in the preceding 2 days, it's going to be a mudfest of the highest order!

Hrmmmm, so you're saying that the decision to put a Rock Razor on the back was a bad one? :p
