ll the students I spoke with were uniformly uncertain about how they were ever going to get jobs, or afford housing, so no different from most Western countries in that respect.

Problem with China is the wealth-inheritance effect is amplified compared to western countries. You have wealth of two parents going to on grandchild. So the haves and have nots gets increasingly bigger gap. When everyone is rapidly increasing their quality, it's not a problem. When this stagnates it is - and they are stagnating now. Unlike Australia, they can't just pump immigration and rely on exports to get you through. I will note though that with an increased population our share of 'export wealth' decreases per capita, but hey nerfonoicists rekon the internal consumption more than makes up for it!

For small amounts the best investment is super. Max out your tax free super contribution before making investments out of super.

Then put everything in super on low cost balanced funds or super low cost index tracking exchange traded funds (ETFs) like Vanguard.

TLDR

Maximise returns by minimising tax and fees.

Depends on many factors. If you need income stream, then etf bond and infrastructure funds would be best. If you don't need income, then primary place of residence or super, again this reduces tax significantly.

But best thing is to interview some financial advisers and pick a good one, then develop holistic plan.

Endowments are very unusual. They bet very long on very illiquid assets that are unavailable to plebs like you and me. Think the very exotic end of the private equity market but without the fees because they manage direct.
