also though you can't see it clearly in that pic the seat post on the AC actualy can pass out of the S-bend seat tube to give you a larger range of seat heights making it alittle more useful.
err... my ac, its an '02 dosen't... are you saying the newer ones have holes for the seat post to stick out the bottom?

yeah the frames with the fluid formed tubeset (03/04) have a hole for the post to come out.

i'll go take a picture in a sec.

Hank.

yes yes ya'll
The Oryx has a life time warranty for frame defects, I own one and its very nice, 4130 "easton rad" style tubing. Disc only, no v-brake mounts .The next lot to come into Oz, so I've been told, will have v-brake mounts for both 24" and 26" you know the under and over thingy. As for coming in Jan don't take it as word, as OS shipping in the bike world is never on time!

Grip

Yeah, yeah... blah, blah.

i know theres a ewwww with the non replaceable derailer hanger, but if i bent /snap it is it possible to get ones that like have an incorperated chain tensioner thingy???
thanks
Grip will be able to fix it for ya... there is another brand that has a selling point of non-replaceable hangers (i think its either santa cruz or craftworks). they claim that they make em strong enough in the first place!

Errr... trust me... they can ALL break! But $125 gets a hanger/dropout completely rebuilt/replaced and repainted. CrMo or Alloy. Cheers for the plug, Dane.

its a steel frame too, thats why it doesnt have a replacable hanger... just bend it back

You might be able to do that a few times, but steel will still work harden eventually.
Shayne is spot on. The other thing that tends to happen is that even if the hanger doesn't break straight away when it bends it usually elongates and stretches the hole where the mech bolts on thereby stuffing the thread.

looks suspiciously similar to my giant ac... except for the top tube!
Quite a while back I posted a link to www.bicyclesb2b.com that surprised a lot of folk when they realised just how a lot of bicycle manufacture is actually done nowadays. In other words "catalogue construction" with surprisingly few Taiwanese companies making the same frame/design/components/tubes/etc available to any company to mix and match and "build" their own bike.... errr stickers are optional.

Fluid formed = some fancy form of butting?

Essentially, but apparently a lot more adept at doing funky things. My understanding is that the tube is drawn using a high pressure fluid flow which allows them to rpecisely control where the material is deposited by directing the flow.
Not so much "drawn" as "blow-moulded". Imagine a piece of normal pipe is laid inside an irregularly shaped die (mould), sealed up and then shot full of fluid at intense pressure (60,000psi type of pressure!). The "normal" pipe "blows" out to adopt the shape of the mould.

Here's a tech article on the process if anyone's interested. Written in simple term.

http://www.jobshop.com/techinfo/papers/hydroforming1.shtml

And here's a pic of Hydro Formed tubing. Note even the "welds" are actually hydro formed and not welds at all.

the oryx has a lifetime warrenty too...
So does my Haro, and countless other frames. What you have to realise though is that it is a warranty against "defects in materials and workmanship" it is NOT a "break it replace it" kind of deal; those warranties are around (Planet X I think, or did they stop that?) but they are rare, and you pay for them.

Don't look at these warranties and think that you won't have to buy another frame if you don't want to.

Oh, another tidbit: by law, "lifetime" warranty extends for 15 years.

Good job Wombat, you typed what I couldnt be bothered typing...
Lifetime warranty means shit all in the grand scheme of things.
That said, it's a burly steel frame, you'd be proud if you busted it, and it could easily be repairable in that event...

another probably very useless tidbit: Lahar the (newzealand i think?) people who make the carbon fibre mtbs put 100 year warranties on their frames! although i think it might be a similar sorta deal ie: if its your fault...
