Project Car / Motorbike thread. Let's see 'em.

A few of us like a fast road tyre and I have been experimenting for the benefit of all RB. So far these are my thoughts:

Toyo R888R - semislick, probably not going to be imported again. Typical semi with bags of grip in ideal circumstances but none to speak of if a dog pisses on the road within say 25km. Also sketchy on dusty surfaces. Used as a track tyre and commute to track only. Lasted a season and a half and pushed to two. Not many km so best not to even speculate.
Yokohama AD08R - semi. Superseded by the AD09 but very similar performance. Great all round tyre and very decent wet weather grip. Great in loose gravel too. Got crazy noisy at half worn so these are now the track tyres. Maybe a season left in them. Did 15,000 before getting too noisy for the road and relegated to track duties.
Yokohama V107. This is a replacement for the very successful V105 and is a pretty good Michelin PS4S clone. Soft and lovely. Not the full grip that the semis have but close enough for road work and very predictable. Great in the wet but absolute rubbish on gravel or dirt. No good as a track tyre given the soft sidewalls mean higher pressures and that reduces grip. 18,000km so shorter life than the PS4S by maybe 15%. They were about 35% cheaper so the economics work.
Yokohama V601 (there are two versions, I bought the grippier one - allegedly). Supposed to be a modern take on the A008 which I ran on my E21 for multiple sets. These I could not love. I gave them away after 7,000km. No real grip and while they were ok in the wet the complete lack of confidence in the dry meant they had to go. Were ok on gravel but only ok and that didn't make up for the lack of grip. They were stupidly sensitive to pressures too. A couple of pissies here and there meant a big difference in grip levels. Going on my mate's wife's A3. Will last until next century without troubling her.
Continental ContiSport 7. These get rave reviews in Europe and the US. I was sceptical given not so great results from a set of 5Ps on the GTS and a set of SC6s on the M2. Anyway gave them a crack. Just done 2,000km with a couple of mountain runs and I am really happy with them. Very predictable and very confidence inspiring. Great wet grip and braking. Unlikley to be wonderful on gravel but I can throw the AD08Rs on for that. It was a toss up between these and AD09s. The new Yoko semis also get reports of bad road noise when worn so I will throw those onto the track rims when the 08s die. So far really good. Not sure how they will stand up to our summers because these were fitted after the worst of the hot weather. The rubber is very soft. Went one size wider on account of supply so a 245 and I kept initial pressures around the 32/30 pissies which are what I run on the road with the semis. A little low so I added 2 and they are nothing short of superb.

If you are looking for a fast road tyre have a look.

I do feel a little ripped off though, I paid for 245mm of tyre and it is only using 205mm at best...

Yes that is 5 sets of tyres in just over 40,000km.

Well I can add some tyres too.

Nankang AR-1. Excellent semi slick, especially for heavy powerful cars. Very grippy can handle high temperatures and good wear. Very noisy at 80% wear. Not great in the wet, but not as bad as the 888Rs.

Advan AD09 pretty much the bench mark for road/track semi slick tyres. A bees dick quicker than the AR-1, but supposedly has better tyre wear and wet performance. Doesn't handle hot weather as well as the AR-1.

Nankang CR-S. Nankangs copy of the AD09. Also a bees dick quicker than the AR-1. Slightly worse wet weather performance than the AD09, but costs less as well. Handled Bathurst no problem, better than the Michelin Cup 2Rs some of the super cars were running.

Michelin PS5. Pretty much the same as the PS4 but better tread life.

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3. Hankooks competitor to the Michelin PS4S. Newer tyre with better wet weather performance which I have witnessed. Has shorter life than PS5 which is to be expected. Good value.

We have ps5 on the mazda 2 and they are really soft in the sidewall so more pissies. Have AR1s on the track fiesta but yet to do much testing.

Club run and a half!

Looks like a narrow body Carrera with a whale tail to me.

To get right into the weeds, it’s also the flat-sided SC style tail rather than the turbo one with the raised edges.
I zoomed in. Early 930 had the flatter whale tail too.
