Binner, you are really inspiring me to get out and work on my S12! That's a work of art!

So, needed a new daily since the auto in my Larry Lancer was dying very slowly.

So you can all meet Eddie Falcon, 146000 genuine km, 2 owner near immaculate car. Only a couple of marks on it. Probably the only 6 cylinder car in Gippsland with a quiet exhaust. Optioned "Classic" model with cruise, full instrumentation, uprated stereo, etc. Only non-standard parts are the 17" ROH mags and Pedders shock with stiffer springs. Nice 60L LPG tank and a Haymon Reece towpack with Transmission cooler.

And a 2008 Honda CBR125RW with a genuine 1055km from new, which was bought by my old man for my P's, but is now selling due to the fear of me throwing an immaculate bike down the road!

Hey team,

I'm not much of a mechanically inclined person, but I need to buy a car for less than $4.5k. I'm going to inspect a '96 Liberty GX wagon this afternoon and had a few questions.

  • Is 274k km on the clock too many? I thought that bar a timing belt change every 100 they're good for a lot more than that.
  • I've been told to check the CV joints and radiator for leaks, and lift the door seals to check rust. Anything else I should worry about?
  • For fun it's been lowered by Pedders and has a 2.5" cat-back exhaust. Sound ok?

Thanks!

so, how many people in this thread actually work on their own vehicle?.... since posting in the thread seems like a lot of guys just buy finished projects or post up random cool cars from around the globe.
I do about 90% of the work on my car. The only things I don't do are tasks that require expensive specialised tools that I will never use again, making it cheaper to have the work done at a shop, or critical things I lack the skills to do, such as planning and fitting custom braided steel brake lines. Otherwise I love working on my car, makes for an awesome stress release.

Any tips on removing fiberglass from fairings?? A previous owner has done a pretty terrible job of repairing it... looks shit. The inside of the fairing is fiberglassed. PArts of it I can pull off, but I'm a little uneasy about tearing at it in case I do more damage! Would acetone unstick it from the plastic?

What model bike? You can generally pick up aftermarket blank fairing kits for less than what it's worth to repair them.

Yep! ~1100kg 147kw NA "Drivers car" Sounds pretty fun to me! Not totally sold on the looks though, really need to see one in person. Love the sound!!
I don't think production weight is that light, correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's more like a bit over 1200.
"...It's still enough to push the 1200-odd kilogram BRZ from 0-100km/h in about 7.0 seconds."

NA is great but I think 147kw is going to be a bit boring if it's actually that heavy, and unlike an FI car, probably won't be very easy to milk extra power from.

I think it's great that Japan is finally pumping out a lightweight RWD again though.

I'd be surprised that with much r&d Subaru wouldn't release a turbo model as an addition to the n/a model later on down the track. 7 seconds to 100 is reasonably quick but Bazza in his vs commodore would come pretty close to having you at the lights with those sort of specs.

I'm all for having a car that handles well, but without straight line speed things do get a little boring. I'll be interested to see the market that ends up purchasing the brz 'cause with the current WRX getting to 100 in 5.3 seconds I know where I'd be putting my money.

Kawa GPX250

Have searched high and low... the only person who seems to make aftermarket kits is in the USA, charges about $500 (+ probably that much in shipping and such) and only come in race kits with no holes for lights, no clips so I'd have to fabricate them etc etc. Basically a massive pain in the arse!

Anyhow, I managed to jimmy the entire piece of fiberglass off. Now theres bits and pieces of resin stuck to edges and all over the shop. I've begun filing them and sanding them where I can, but I can see this being a seriously arduous task! Got my hands on some ABS cement too. Tested it on a couple of hidden scratches and cracks and it works a charm!
The plan is to weld (solder) the fairing back together as well as I can, then sand, use the ABS cement and rinse and repeat until I'm happy with it!

What kind of paint stripper can I use on ABS plastic? I've got three kinds here, but none of them say a thing about plastic. "Good for most surfaces, incliding; metal & wood"

Should just bought a not-beater bike to begin with! fuark

noice, whats in the rear?...

rims are pretty swish.Smash out some more pics of the resto/build

Just a standard 1300. I was keen to keep it that way until whilst cruising along the freeway last night at about 90mph a split screen kombi came roaring past and disappeared into the sunset. Sometimes i think i'd like a better motor but i like that whats in it is reliable and fairly trouble free.

I don't have many more photos, I started out with all intentions to take pics along the way but got buried in the work itself to a point where i only got a few shots now and then.

I agree with you, but personally my level of impressed really only goes as far as "they've done something good again, that was already done a long time ago". The suspension design is typical (struts front / multi rear), the diff I believe is an IS300 unit, and personally I'd imagine the low COG mantra is more of a marketing game than something that it going to give it a significant edge. Actual weight is 1220kg apparently, which is decent - and stability control (which it appears to have) would be a nice thing to have on a rear drive.

It's great news for new-car buyers that want a bit of old fashioned FR goodness, but for $50k, I'd probably nab myself a clean lotus elise and walk away with the change.

I'm hoping someone here may have some information about doing an engine swap on a motorcycle? Basically I have a 96 gsxr 750 but I want to put a more modern fuel injected engine in it. Would I need to get an engineers cert.? Can I use an engine from a statutory write off?

So I was driving last night and drove over what looks like some demolition rubble that fell off a the back of a trailer. Put a dent in my alloys. It would cost about $210 to be proffesionally repaired, or about $350 to get a new wheel into Australia. Any thoughts as to which way is prefferable? is a repaired rim still strong?

I think my steering needs realigning now aswell. Really kinda pissed off about this.
