Interesting event on Thursday. #2 was heading down for the weekend and the XR4 went all Christmas trees about 30 minutes away. Bit damp and night so the easiest thing was to chuck it on a trailer and bring it here.
Subsequent investigation found no codes logged or pending. In fact the car drove onto the trailer and off without any issues or lights. It is a 2008 model so the computer is quite basic and we came to the conclusion that it was probably fuel related. Injectors were cleaned about 3 months ago and they were sad. Anyway a full strip down of fuel system was in order and dropping the tank is supposed to be an arse of a job. And to change the fuel filter you need to drop the front of the tank anyway. Tank was pretty clean considering but the pump suction screen was quite dirty and had a lot of free material in it. The fuel filter was dated 2008... Yeah. So all cleaned up, new pump since it was out and for $180 made sense, new filter and blew out the lines and swapped injectors. New ones will be ordered.
In the process of all of that some grey black grease was on the front of the engine. More looking and the drivers inner CV boot had destroyed itself. So a new CV boot was also installed. When the old one came off we found that the last time a dodgy was done. The boot is a trilobe design and fits into CV outer. Last time they either couldn't get the right boot or were too lazy. The cut the inner portion of the old boot and tried to double up the new one over the top. Dodgy brothers inc. All back together and did 300km with no problems.
And here is das boot... (sic)
