Riding and camping NSW Coast

We are heading on a camping road trip from melbourne to Sydney then up the coast to Byron for easter. Any good camping spots close to single trail that are worth stopping by on the way up? Have no real plans yet apart from just cruising up the pacific HWY and stoping where ever looks good, so very flexible. feel free to PM me if you don’t want to share your spots with the world . Cheers Will.

Kempsey, coffs, both north and south for xc, pretty sure theres heaps up near byron, just not sure how easy it is to ride, re private land or not, take a detour to Glenrock in newcastle, or if you wanna go a little further north to brissy, theres heaps

If you're happy enough to blow straight past Bairnsdale, make a bee-line for Tathra as a first stop for a couple of days of surf & trails. At Tathra, if you camp at the Tathra Motor Village you're just a 5min roll to the foot of the trail network. Bermagui is just up the road & also has some rad trail so that could work as another stop. After that, keeping to the coast/camping theme Nowra's also got so decent trails, but just to the north of Sydney you've also got Ourimbah which is definitely worth stopping by for a blat (PM Swaz- involved with the Ourimbah Club & might be able to give you some feedback). Rode around Coffs a few years back which was also pretty sick riding.

Dozer might have some great suggestions of spots between Port Mac & Coffs. Also could be worth shooting Charliedontsurf a PM too as he's currently in Byron riding & might be able to point you in the right direction for their network.

Tathra is awesome, Azza runs the MTB shop there and can show you the trail maps. Don't camp in town, make the trip up to Middle Beach which is totally worth it and due to having to walk a whole 50m to your campsite there is hardly ever anyone there.

Mogo is good fun if you're heading up the coast, you may as well if you're going from Tathra to Nowra for the Husky trails.

Yep tathra is the best riding destination in aust.

Stunning trails, right over the beach.

Plenty to do for the family.

Can easily ride all trails in one decent session.

Husky is ok. Good trails, a little spread out, but plenty of maps online

You've clearly never been to Canberra. Local pride yes, but when you've got Stromlo, Majura, Kowen, Sparrow Hill, Tuggeranong Pines, Bruce ridge, Jerrabomberra and the Centenary Trail (plus a whole lot of illegal stuff) all within 25 minutes drive from Parliament house and no more than 40 minutes from every other spot on the list, well - it could be worth the detour.

Tathra is great though.

depends on just how coastal you want to go, Wingello forest is an hour inland, or pretty much on the route if you are coming up from canberra. plenty of single track there as used in 3 ring circus and highland fling, and can camp in the main clearing

Not on the Pacific Hwy, but completely agree with you- Canberra's rad as fuck in that sense if you've crew prepared to show you around the non-Stromlo network. Read into the OP as a 'places along the coast to ride while we're making our way up to Byron on the Pacific Hwy'.

Go camping out at Crowdy Bay NP near Taree (about an hours drive) and drive to Kiwarrak state forest for amazing trails... best to spend two days here as its got 40+km of singletrack and a it's a bit of a maze. Up River trail has a massive see-saw that rolls out into a steep rollercoastery bit of trail... Pretty sure there are camping grounds closer by if you don't feel like camping out on the beach.

Camp out at Hat Head NP near Kempsey (35mins drive) and go ride the trails out the back of the Kempsey golf course - also a bit of a maze but super fun with some wood work bits and some steep, rocky loose stuff further in. The cannonball run is fast and jumpy! I think there has been more trail built and others upgraded since I visited 2 years ago. The golf club is also super cool with riders having a beer at the club house afterwards.

Plenty of places for camping around Coffs Harbour - definitely hit up Jacks Ridge at Nambucca heads - it's a fun, flowy 10km loop and you will definitely want to ride it more than once. Also the Cows with Guns trails and Sawmill section of Pine Creek state forest - definitely worth the trip.
