Scuba Divers - Victoria?

Gents and gentettes, anyone here done any scuba diving down the coast between Torquay and Apollo Bay? I'm only open water qualified, so can only dive to 18 meters, but am doing advanced ow early Jan so good for 30m after that. Ispend a lot of time based in Torquay over the summer months and would be interested to learn of some cool spots, or better still find some crew to jump on a dive or 2 with. I will do club dives etc but would like to hear if there are any well known or not so well know reasonably simple yet interesting spots down that way. Have read a little about the ss casino off Apollo bay, any experience with that one? And any dive shops down that way for a bit of local knowledge, refills etc? A morning dive at Apollo followed by a session at iride would be a pretty filthy way to spend a day! Or vice versa..

I've spent a lot of time along that stretch of coast. There are plenty of good shore dives and loads of crays. I'm not going to give you secret cray spots but I'm happy to put you in the general area so you can find your own.
Urquarts Bluff through to the marine sanctuary at Aireys is worth exploring. Eastern view through to Lorne has some good offshore reef that is a bit of a swim but can be worth it. Lorne itself gets hammered so I don't go there but from Wye River on there are heaps of good spots. The best diving along there is always off the headlands and on the wider reefs.

Cheers mate, would never ask a man to impart his knowledge of cray spots.. tbh, I've captured many a cray in years gone by in Tassie and am not much of a fan anymore. Thanks buckets for the info!

There is a shore dive just out of appollo bay (on the cape otway side of town). I believe it's called marengi or something. There is small caravan park and you look out upon two large exposed rocks with a seal colony on them. Currents there are pretty epic so would highly recommend diving on slack tide when there is minimal swell. Lots of bull kelp and the wife and saw a banjo shark and a huge ray. Entry looks easier off the rocks near the caravan park but is MUCH easier wading out from the shore. Also if you are down that way and fancy a mission accross to SA Ewens Ponds is a pretty spectacular fresh water dive site.

It's all cool fun until someone turns up for dinner.

I had an instructor tell me he got stuck on a line doing a 1 hr deco stop with great whites circling.

Still far better odds than mixing it with traffic in a country where people driving cars hate you! But yeah, not your ideal deco stop eh! Looks like old mate put his head through the hull at the end there.

The " more dangerous to drive to the dive site then dive" argument I use with the wife all the time ( who is an OW diver )

6 dives planned this week in Phuket, was hard to get a spot, everything is booked out.

No wrecks to penetrate but can pop ones head in the "King cruiser" ferry that went down in 1997, it's collapsing so no going in.

Don't think I've ever heard of a Scuba diver being attacked by a shark, only time you're really at risk is when you're floating on the surface.

Must book in some dives this summer, last dive was the zenobia in Cyprus a few months ago. Was unreal

Don't abalone divers get taken on the regular?
