The 29er thread.

I've been contemplating building up a 29er, looking at the Zion 29er EBB (steel) frame and the Misfit Psycles Dissent (alloy).

For those that have tried both steel and alloy frame- how much difference in absorption and compliance is there between steel and alloy? I'd be running it rigid so a bit of compliance might be nice.

The new Schwalbe Racing Ralph 29er tyres are very interesting. There is a thread or two on the mtbr.com 29er forum with pics etc. They come in 2.4 and 2.25, very light and fast and big volume. They'll be going on the SIR9 when it is built.

I have just paid for a Redline Monocog 29er in Black. This is a web image as mine hasn't turned up yet, but hopefully it is the same as the picture. Oh I am putting on a gold KMC chain to match. More upgrades at a later stage.

Hi guys, I am interested in building up a 29er and was looking for advice.

Basically what I wanted was a steel frame, on the cheaper side not a boutique super light thing. Geared frame, no SS madness for me.

Some links how to get a hold of a frame would be great. Any links on a decent wheelset would be great too.

Thanks.

That looks awesome, not sure if it will be quite long enough for me though...

Wow if I had the money I would get the Intense Spider 29er!

That looks like a good site.

Oops.
Did not read the part about you being 6'5".
I would suggest that you may need to look elsewhere like Niner or Ventana.
Get onto Shannon at www.mtbprecision.com.au .
He is the importer for both.

here is the 29er that I belt around on.
Waltworks frame - built in Boulder colarado.
Rohloff hub.

Alright can someone pls try and talk me out of this.

I'm eyeing off one of the Gary Fisher Paragon 29 inch frames, as a build up project.

Can anyone advise on mid-range 29 inch fork (and approx cost) and reasonable wheelset (is UST available for the 29's yet?)

And if you could offer some very good reasons why my money should stay in my wallet, that would be great too!

Go with a reba if you have the cash, if you don't I have a Marzocchi which was cheap and seems to work well, bit heavy but that is all I would complain about.
The rep from Velocity showed me a very nice set of 29er wheels a month or so back, from memory they were called "Blunt" or something similar. The weight seemed respectable and they looked nice and tough. If I had gears, i would have a set as they were well priced.

There are no good reasons why your money should stay in your wallet. It will get all musty and will be very lonely with out its friends in the LBS's till. You will have a bigger smile on your dial once you release the cash from the confines of your wallet:D.

No, I will not talk you out of it.

Rather I will talk you into it.

I suggest a Manitou 29er Minute if you're happy buying online (about $650) if not I second the Reba suggestion.

You can get Mavic Crossmax 29er wheels if you got bulk dough to spend, alternatively Bontrager do some tubeless wheels too. Stans rims are an option.

I'm running the Velocity Blunt rims that Jaseh mentioned (not the complete wheels, just the rims) and they are working well so far - I've ghetto converted them to tubeless and no dramas so far. They're pretty light (under 500gs), strong, and look good too.

I've heard good reviews of the complete wheelsets or you could get some Hope Pro II hubs laced up to them - that would be a nice wheelset.

I only suggest doing any of this if you are comfortable with selling all your 26 inch bikes in the next couple of months though...

Nice Waltworks Zed

The minutes, forgot about them, if your not keen on buying O/S they are listed at $790 here, I'm sure you could get them for $750 and get warranty support as well:D

DAMN that looks the goods.

Love Redline, reminds me of my BMXing days as a kid, they were hot bikes and everybody wanted one!

How does she ride?

Having an ethical dilemma...

Could go the Paragon buildup option, but do I really need a 29 hardtail when I already have a 26 hardtail (which I am exceedingly happy with)
So I could go the Paragon buildup, but as a singlespeed,
But then if I'm going to build a singlespeed, why not do it in steel?
Or I could get one of these puppies:

Decisions decisions! (hey a man has to dream can't he!)

Also see Kona are releasing the Hei Hei in a 29 inch format next year, hmmmm

Hi everyone, I'm Fatty and I'm now a 29'r owner. This sort of feels like an AA meeting.
I've put off buying one of these beasties for ages and now that I've ridden one I am smacking myself for not doing this sooner. My new rig is an 08 GT Peace 9'r, stock for the moment. I love this thing! It was so cheap but it's great, I can't seem to stop riding it.
