The Fixie Thread

How did you manage that Ezylee?

Mikey, had a young bloke come into work yesterday that makes straps exactly like those ones that you posted up that he has put onto a set of PC's on his bike. He gave me a breif rundown of how to do it and I'm almost keen to try making a set if you are?

Nope, I'm not in to tricks on a fixed gear bike. It was a fillet brazed Hillman track frame that I got from one of the guys that works at Gear in brisbane. I am not sure how old it was, but the next frame isn't going to be 2nd hand. I will be buying brand new just for confidence reasons. I often go on long rides on this thing, I don't want to be stuck..

or you could just sent it to grip....

Just a quick question. At the moment i am running a 48x16 an want to make it easier and spin more. Like have a quick cadence. Should i get a 42 sprocket and still have the 16 on the back, this would give me 69 gear inches. OR keep the 48 and go a larger cog on the back. Which one would be better also i ride a few hills, but im strong enough to climb em :p

Hey fixie warriors,

This is my SS Uni commuter:

I'm looking at buying a cheap wheelset off eBay with a flip-flop hub on the back so I have a fixed option when I want to indulge my hipster tendencies; these are the kind of wheelsets I'm looking at- Wheelset 1 and Wheelset 2. Obviously they're not the highest quality, but I'm on a buget and they'll look good. What factors will I need to consider when changing wheelsets? At the moment I'm running a 53-18 ratio with a 3/32" chain (as I've just put it on the middle of the old 5 speed cassette) and 27 inch wheels.

I'm guessing tyres (obviously), chain to a 1/8" and chainring to a 1/8" (I'll likely just try and find a whole new crankset). Other than that, the brakes should reach and the geometry change shouldn't be too bad right?

I'm running 700 wheels on an old frame built for 27" wheels and had to get long reach brakes. The BB has ended lower than I'd like which makes pedal strike an issue when riding fixed. You can compensate a bit with 165 mm cranks.

I had no problems using old road 3/32" chain rings with a 1/8" chain and a 1/8" cog. Not sure why but it all seems to fit. The 1/8" cog won't take a 3/32" chain though.

these are the kind of wheelsets I'm looking at- Wheelset 1 and Wheelset 2. Wheelset 2 is a deathtrap and I promise to stay away from all Stars wheelsets in the interest of personal safety.

There, I fixed that for you. It's pretty well documented elsewhere that Stars wheelsets should not be touched. If you can't afford to buy anything more expensive than Stars, you're better off buying 2nd hand. Wheelset 1 however, is of much higher quality, and will last much longer. Alex rims + Formula hubs are a proven combination. Plus, with 3 hours left on bidding, they look super cheap!

Yeah, fair call- I hadn't really done any research into them, and those two stores seem to be putting out wheelsets regularly so it wasn't those ones specifically. Thanks for the advice also Joemax. Is 53-16 too big a ratio to push?

That ratio works out to be about the same as my ratio, which is 50/15. It's a really big ratio for the street, but depending on how flat your area is, it's actually not too bad. I'd recommend at least a front brake though.

Selling my 2010 KHS Flite. Mint. 53. Pm for details.

Also looking to buy a trixie orintated frame, or a slightly more relaxed frame (or complete). Its not for me, for a guy at uni.

Hey guys;

Im looking to get a fixie in the near future, im 6ft 4" etc, what size frame would you reccomend be best? if anyone has any parts they'd like to donate/sell, PM me.

-Drew.

Hey guys I'm getting my new bike next week its a SE Draft Lite 2009. Just wondering if I could get some advice on upgrades. After doing some reading through here I was thinking of putting some gatorskins on in 28c and running some spd pedals. Or is better to start with toe-clips?

I'm also 6'4", and I ride a 57cm c-c seat tubed KHS Flite 100, with an 90/80mm (a bit unsure on exact measurement) stem. But at my height I probably should be on a 60cm or so, but i've got the seat fairly high and a long-ish stem so it fits me well.
So if I were you i'd be looking somewhere between 57-62cm seat tube length, which would be a L to XL depending on brand. And also probably the same top tube length as your seat tube length on average, which would depend on the proportions of you torso/legs.
Hope that helps Drew.

Personally I don't like toe clips, if you are used to SPD's then use them. You will enjoy riding it more.. as far as upgrades go, ride it first. Once you skid through your tyres chuck on the gators.

No offence but that is extremely bad advice. I'm 6'2 ish and ride a 61cm c-c seat tube. For someone 6'4 you'd want to be on at least a 62. As much as you think you can make up for the size of the frame with a raised seat post and long stem, you can't. There's a lot more to bike fit than just you height and the only way to really figure it out is to get fitted up professionally but that costs $$. Without going to all that hassle though just get something about the 62-63cm. The correct size frame makes so much difference when on a skinny tyred bike. Get it right and you'll be a lot happier.

Donno if anyone on here is interested...
I have an original Suntour SEVEN groupset i'd be willing to part ways with (at a small price or trade),
All complete (shotgun shifters, brakehoods {double lever setup for drops and flats), brake calipers, front & rear deraileur) missing the crankset however.

Got it off my old roadie come fixie,
has only riden 50km (old school speedo on the bike indicated this)
Cira 1960's

Pm and i will send photos.
