what is the actaul theory with counting cards, is it memorising every card that is on the table, so that you know the chances of what is going to come up next?? .. or more so not come up.

Basically each card in a deck is assigned a number of -1, 0, or +1. You can keep track of how a deck is going by counting the numbers as cards come out.

It is difficult to count cards these days since they recycle the deck into a sealed automatic shuffler after they have been used. In the past they had 6 decks and went through almost the whole lot before shuffling and reloading the shoe so it was possible to know how many cards were left.

Twas a good movie but the documentary of it is better.

Yeah, as willy_c mentioned you assign each group of cards a value.. generally its 2 to 6 a +1, 7-9 a zero, and a card worth 10/ACE a value of -1.
The strategy is then to wait until the count is high, so that it is statistically more likely that a high card will come out (as if the count is high, then more lower cards have been played). And since the dealer is forced to hit on 17 or less, it is more likely that they will bust because its more probably that a higher valued card will fall, thus going over 21 (as you are able to see their revelead card)... Obviously its more complicated then that, but I beleive that is the general theory behind card counting. There are more variants on the way you assign values etc.

As has been mentioned, it relies on knowing how many cards are in the shoe, and that cards arn't replaced once they have been dealt etc.

I thought the movie was ok, a bit too... 'Hollywood'.

The only truthful aspect of that movie is probably that casinos do infact, exist.

Try reading Ben Mezrich's 'Bringing down the house'

It's the book they based the movie on - and it is by all accounts a true story. It's also a pretty good read but unfortunately the fact that the casino's eventually worked out the students system means that it is now almost impossible to carry out a similar operation anywhere in the world. Shame that, as Casino owners tend to be massive pricks and it is always nice to see them get a taste of their own medicine.

Really? I'm suprised, I might have to read it. I think it's just the hollywood spin put on it that gave me the impression it was just tripe.
