The Photo Snob Thread

There is shit on flickr I will never understand. There's this one landscape group that I can never get a photo accepted in... looking through it today and this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexisjgerard/5648741874/in/photostream/) has been invited to the group.
Holy shit, how on earth does something like that end up in a group called the 'Art of Landscape'?! I understand he's "trying to capture and give a voice to the demise of his local area" or some such nonsense, but his photos, and worse still, the comments left make me want to cut myself. Give me a fucking break!

Just after some thoughts on skin smoothing for portraits. I'm learning a new technique and would like some opinions.

Unfortunately, the snake shot isn't mine. I simply found it on a forum and thought I'd link it here. But man, I would like it printed huge and hung on my wall.

EDIT: I did some snooping. Here is what you're after: http://www.flickr.com/photos/34378062@N04/

I don't get some of the fanfare on flickr. I read something in a blog praising this guys work. I added him as a contact for a while, but got sick of the photos he was uploading, they were just good quality happy snaps to me, but they all have hundreds of views and favourites. All because someone 'in the know' said people should like his work. I say build your reputation on your own merit and let the photos speak for themselves.

Once I put up a street shot of a woman in business attire and it got heaps of views straight away, I thought it might've been an indicator that it was one of my better shots and people liked it, turns out people were just searching for "high heels" and it was coming up because I'd put that in the keywords… Lesson learnt. Now I avoid putting anything like that in the keywords as I want people to like the photo, not the content.

Basically, take everything with a grain of salt.

I use flickr to upload graffiti pictures and they are usually viewed and commented on by the same small group of people....but sometimes one of the non-private pics gets added into some photo group and its BANG! 200 comments about the lighting and composition and 'what setup did you use' 'what lens' etc...and often its taken on the guys point and shoot with no thought behind it.
My conclusion: Photography is very trendy at the moment and there are a lot of amateurs about. Differentiate yourself with good quality work and a nice simple website with portfolio.

HANDFULS of salt. Just had to vent that frustration and confusion.

Flickr has many weird sides. Including the above but a few more that I stumbled across...

My mate vaughan and his beard http://www.flickr.com/photos/benjamin-h/5545272743/in/set-72157626192350086 ... this photo got quite popular... I dare you to check out the other favourites of the people who favourited it :p

90% of flickr is actually amateur pornography

Cheers Sam, Yeah it's in PS. Using layer masks etc for the first time ever. I've got so much to learn

Love the smoke shots, 2&3 are sweet. Can I ask what settings you used? I actually tried the same shots last night myself and after looking at Tristan's shot on his website, I've binned mine. I suck haha

Now i've joined Flickr and have looked through a fair bit, i'd be more inclined to say 90% of it is amateur sh*t.

Yay for teh intarnetz!
That goes without saying though. The only saving grace is that some of the amateur porn is good quality :p

http://www.flickr.com/groups/art_of_landscape/ this is the group in question. you can add one photo a month and it has to be approved by a mod. Nothing of mine has ever been approved... check out the photos that have been...
