After forever
I might be the odd one out, I think Rolex's are incredibly ugly, particularly with that magnifier for the date. Really looks like its for old men.

I must be like seriously old then. The only Rolex I'd consider wearing is a vintage one, way cool...

Look what I just bought, ooohhh.

My previous watch winders have been made from old junk, motors from microwave ovens, ice machines etc. Saw this on gumtree and snapped it up.

Oooooooh yeah baby.... :llama:

Love the LED calc watch. Still looks good today IMO.

Just wondering if anyone has any watch repairers/restorers they'd recommend, pref in Melb but if they're awesome obviously I could send to anywhere. Even better if they specialise in Roamer mechanical watches (assuming I have my linguo correct)

It's for my dads old mid 70s era Roamer Stingray chronograph.

Apparently inside it looks like this

I basically want to get back looking newish, and fix a few broken parts. Given its one of the few things I have left of my dad it means a lot to me. I've been hunting for repair places in town (melb) and there are heaps. But I'd like a recommendation or two if possible.

Bulova

Anybody have any insight into Bulova watches & possibly Seiko? Thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these -: http://www.bulova.com/en_gb/watch/bulova/precisionist/96B175

Looking to potentially buy it through Amazon (link below), as it's about $220 cheaper than I've seen locally at $580ish. Any known issues with buying something like this through Amazon? -:

Another possible candidate is the Seiko Velatura model SNAF39P (top middle in link) -: http://www.seiko.com.au/collections/velatura/men. Have only enquired about this locally & is around the $670 mark.

Both Japanese quartz movements as best I can tell.

Thanks

Watch freaks - help me out.

I have fucking tiny little wrists (6.0" i think). I have an Oris TT divers watch. Automatic. 38mm. It fits me nicely but is losing about a minute a day.

I want to get something similar but more accurate. In the size I want, with the certifide Chronomter accuracy the Omega Seamaster is about the only option I can find. Oris don't make this size anymore but I'm unimpressed with its' accuracy to date so don't know if i'd go there again.

The Seamaster is $5 to $6k which makes my sphincta tighten. I wouldn't mind going second hand or possibly this

Any opinions about this seller? Any significant danger in buying OS? Should I just look out for 2nd hand? Any other watches I should be looking at?

Cheers, John

When buying watches upwards of $1000 I would suggest to keep in in Australia, or alt least a common, well known international store. authenticwatches.com seems to bit of a hit and miss according to a few of the watch fourms, IMHO I would steer clear.

Cheers. No point in chasing a bargain that isn't a bargain. I second hand a reason option or do I need to prepare myself to pay full price.

Second hand is definitely a reasonable option. Let the original purchaser take the initial price hit. It most cases people who are into watches seem to turn them over pretty quickly so most are in excellent condition. Brand new from a grey dealer is also another great option. In both cases you'll very likely still get the original manufacture warranty.

Check out http://www.rolexforums.com classifieds. There's plenty of Seamasters for sale, plus a million other options! Both secondhand and grey dealers selling brand new ones.
Also check out Jomashop and Chrono24.

Cheers for that. Some good looking options on all those.

Yes, I've come across them. Although not my cup of tea, they do have a rep of being decent timepieces.

Wow there is some nice time pieces in this thread.

I bought myself a Tag Grand Carrera as a present to myself after leaving my job after 12 years and getting married. It has lived in a safe for the past few years when I was living in Canada, but when I returned to Australia it became my daily wear... up until the clasp broke and the watch went flying onto a Melbourne footpath followed by fear and tears. Now I only wear it on special occasions.

I'd really like to get a Brietling next.

A watchophile at work (who's big on Fliegers) said that U-Boats are good for balancing out your forearms/biceps if you're right handed, and not much else.

It's all very 'matter of opinion' though, this area. He said they were good quality, but that "You don't want a U-Boat ... you don't want anything you can possibly find in the window of a shopping mall jewellery store"

Sounds a bit elitist but at the same time ... if I was spending $5K on something like jewellery I'd be trying to find something quite unique. It probably wouldn't be as renowned, but if it was unique, good quality and backed by others on places like WatchUSeek, I'd be going for that.

But don't listen to me. I'd never spend more that $500 on a watch anyway.
