What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

It's been a minute lol, so here is a couple of days rolled into one :)

Pre-Christmas I helped my 84yo neighbour get his bike going properly again. The legend still gets out on the local rail trail 3 times a week and had completely worn out the drivetrain on his MTB.
Ran around and sourced new deore 10 speed cluster, chain and single chainring. Up'd chainring to 34T and rear to a 11-42 to give a more usable range for him.
He was so rapped with the result he's been out nearly every day since and invited me out for a couple of rides. The legend smashes out 40km like its nothing!

I'd been meaning to complete the Australian Alpine Epic for years now, finally got it done on the 2nd.
Stupidity decided to take an extra 10km side route off to visit Craig's Hut, it almost killed me. 5 1/2 hours later I made it back to the car lol.

I would like to tick the Alpine Epic off the list some time down the track. What kind of elevation are you looking at along that route?

In a holiday period depressingly devoid of biking owing to a bunch of other commitments, I did manage to hire a bike and disappear for a day while in Nelson, NZ;

Did manage 2,100m of elevation gain in a bit over a day according to Strava, many fun was had.

It's officially 1124m elevation over 46km.
I added an additional 300m to get out and back to Craig's Hut.
What I grossly under estimated was the affect of the high elevation in addition to the rough trails. Was a hard day!

Get out and do it if you can, I have heard rumours this will be the last season for the full Epic. Lack of riders now to make it worthwhile :(

the enshittification of mt buller continues.... No summer chairlift was a big turd sandwich. Thredbo is probably the best summer MTB resort with a year-round village, with their detachable quad chairlift WITH proper bike racks to take riders to the top of the mountain.

Ah, that's not good to hear. :(

If you are ever down in Tassie, I have a few epic rides that I reckon you'd like.

First ride for the year also first ride since 14th Dec.

First proper ride with a 60mm stem to correct the handlebar grip position WRT pedals etc. Feels like it is back to where I like it.

Really digging the 10° backsweep of these Spank spoon bars, but it did result in the "reach" feeling cramped. The 60mm stem has definitely sorted that.

Smashed out a lunchtime lap or 3 at Eatons. Got lapped a couple of times by a young bloke on a hardtail XC bike (Eatons is pretty hectic shit for anyone not familiar). Nice kid up for chat. After our first chat I realised he must be a serious racer given he was using Eatons as a training ground for Tech practice on an XC bike.

As he lapped me and we had our second chat, I asked what he was training for and it turned out he was off the NZ tomorrow (I think) for oceanic champs hopping to finish top 5 and ride World Cups (or maybe worlds champs - not sure).

Wished him luck as he left me for dead on a climb. I love mountain biking. It's the people's sport. I looked him up later and realised this kid won junior national champs in XCO in 2024 but out on the trail he was just a bloke up for a chat and having a spin. Love it.

Trying to fast track my return to the bike with hi tech recovery.

My skin cancer Dr put me on to the red light therapy last year. Had a frozen shoulder at the time and 5min on it immediately improved it (could move shoulder about twice as much as pre treatment) so I went straight out and bought one. Dr uses it to accelerate post surgery healing in his patients and I have read it can help with neuropathy too so fingers crossed it might help with the gimp foot.

Oh, and I bought some more stuff. Some tools and consumables from aliexpress.

Built a couple of fat rim wheels for the Karate Monkey. The Sunringle rims are some of the easiest ever to tape up for tubeless. They held 40 PSI for 2 days without sealant.

It's a chonky bike, but it's fun! Surly aren't renowned for making weight weenie frames.

What red light therapy device did you buy? Link please?

Went to bed in the discs on the new roadie. Chain slipped off and got wedged between chain ring and frame. Had to use a lot of force to get it unstuck and scrapped some paint off the frame. Continued bedding in. Chain slipped again. Rather than do damage to the frame I walked it home (luckily pretty close) and took the entire chain ring/crank set off to free the chain. After removal it turns out my initial effort has actually caused damage to the carbon
:mad::mad:
Now waiting to hear back from the bike shop

The lesson is: don't buy road bikes...

Poorly set up limit screws?

Purchased some parts to resurrect this old home made beast into a commuter. It does have some limitations though unfortunately...

Rigid fork, new rear wheel and some other bits and pieces ordered.

Thankfully Hope to the rescue with end cap compatibility, 135 X 12 and needed to get it built onto a 26 inch rim. Just missed with clearance for 27.5 unfortunately.

Seat post is 26.8mm, so no dropper and a little head tube, so I can't run a tapered fork. I did get a rigid 29er, 15mm X 100mm, straight steerer fork from Ali that I'll be running with 27.5 to start with, so hopefully it won't implode!

Back in it's glory days... It also raced 4X and DH nationals at Stromlo in about 2007, albeit in a slightly different configuration to this.
