What the hell is Boost ???

bear the bear

Is a real bear
So I'm seriously looking into buying a modern day bike probably a 650b as trying to find a 26er is harder than Chinese algebra and everything seems to be boost this and boost that... from wheels to forks to cranks/bb, even frames..

What the hell does boost mean or refer to ???

The last time I bought a MTB, wheels were 26", bb's were euro (either 68 or 73mm) headsets were either 1 1/8" or 1.5" and 99% of frames had a 10 x 135 rear end or 12x150 for DH

So confused now..

Bonus question: Why would I want my forks to be offset???
To answer your question, boost is 15x110 front/ 12x148 rear. Bonus, super-boost is 12x157 rear.
Fork offset is explained here

$1500 - $2000 would be max budget for complete bike, 2nd hand I could get something that someone has specced nicely (sure it wouldn't be the latest and greatest model but that plus aesthetics don't put me off)..
That amount will buy you a decent fork these days.

There are actually 2 as new 2021 Trid ZZ's for sale locally around the $1700 asking but I'm hesitant as again they're kinda specific purpose wise and the stock parts besides perhaps the pikes are average at best..
I sold the pikes because I had the Marzocchi that are on mine in the garage. My friend who brought them liked them lots. His friend that brought them liked them lots...they seem pretty good for doing what needs to be done.

I run a 400mm seat post for commuting.

At $1700, brand new isn't much more.

Ah so instead of 110 being reserved only for 20mm thru axle you can now run 15mm in a 110 hub width ... got it
And as for the rear again it's just hub spacing ok so no big deal 12mm is no longer reserved for the realms of DH (and the odd obscure hardtail ie.. Atomlab)... check

I seconded @moorey on the banshee. I recently bought a banshee rune, and god it's an awesome bike. Love the flexibility of being able to run 650b or 26, boost (12x148) or non boost (12x142). I highly recommend them if you can stretch your budget. I originally was gonna go vitus sommet or nukeproof mega, but decided to stretch the budget a bit to go the rune. No regret. Best bike I've ridden thus far.

They are $3300 Now !!!!

Well they have bumped that up recently. I was showing a friend a week or two ago and it was a few hundred less than that. It's $3k on their site. Unfortunately it hasn't been the $2k run out special for quite a while now. There will be a sale again one day.

Trid zz has been one of my regrets, shouldn't of sold it Fox. Did 80km on it at bright years ago. Otherwise buy a sishku, the secondhand market is full of flogged old shit if it's 26.

But back to your original question, boost is mostly about axle spacing and chain alignment. Apparently for the many many many years that axles were 135mm and 150mm wide the people responsible for bike design had it all wrong!!! Who would have thought?
When bike were built with the proper diameter rims, 100mm front/135mm rear for most stuff & 110/150 for really crazy shit was plenty 'cos the hubs are relatively wide for the rim radius -> good brace angle = stiff wheels. But then They started going silly wheel diameters, which in comparitive terms makes those hubs narrower -> floppier wheels. So They made wider hubs, with frames & forks to match, and called the thing Boost. Now wider rear hubs move the cassette outboard, so to maintain the chainline, the chainring/s also need to move out to match, hence Boost cranks.

If you're buying now/soon, it makes sense to buy Boost. In a coupla years time if you need a new wheel or wheel set, what's going to be easiest to lay your hands on ?
