Giant XTC

Hey mate I noticed you have Mavic XM819 Wheelset on your Giant XTC. What do you think of them?. I am looking to buy a set of them. What hubs do you use with them.

I reckon they'll be the DT Swiss cerit hubs that came std with the XTC C1. Good solid wheelset but a bit heavy for XC racing @ 2,000g approx.

But I'd have those rims again if I could on a lighter hub & spokes - would make a great wheelset for training and keep something lighter in the garage for race day only.

Choppo - if you ever get the chance to do some upgrades and can lighten the bike you'll notice a big improvement in the handling over the rougher stuff.

The Reba is a good fork but the newer Fox/SIDS and some lighter wheels will transform the ride. I was surprised at how much of an improvement when I upgraded mine.

But is nice either way cause that frame is sexy in black.

Yep the new SIDs are light here's my 2007 Carbon Marathon Epic upgraded with a SID Team fork

With the AC 350 wheelset Stans Tubeless conversion light rotors and all it weighs pretty close to 10kg now. It's as light as my old Trek 5500 roadie!

I'm no expert, but the wheelset has given me no touble at all. I see a few people have made some "lighten-ing" suggestions, but I'm just not that serious. They have the stock DT Swiss hubs, and roll great!

Thanks for the compliments! I'll look into the fork and maybe the wheels. I'm not that serious, but have just bought a Ritchey Carbon stem and flat bar set, and the RaceFace Next SL seatpost, which all match the carbon weave accross the bike. I'll get another pick up soon, as she looks SWEEEET now.

That's how it starts. Pretty soon you'll be hunting down Ti bolts to save 2g. :D

Just curious, why have you got 2 ASR's?
Are there much differ between the 07 and the 09?

I did consider getting a 575, but I really don't do much heavy duty trail riding. So I decided to get another 09 ASR (it is about 1kg lighter) I use it mostly for racing & use the 07 ASR for trianing & trail riding. Also I'm quite small (62-63kg) so the lighter bikes really feel better for me.

Hey Hugor - for interest sake what yr model is the bike? And any interest in trying to get the weight down a little further?

Spongeplank Dalepantski
well i'm just kinda starting out again here and this is what i've managed to put together (and all i'm likely to have for some time... the minister for finance already doesn't like what i've spent on it  ). coming from a hardtail, the intense is pure heaven, i'm heaps more confident and can ride singletracks for a couple of hours without getting a sore ass now. currently working on my fitness with a singlespeed aswell and hoping to get myself a couple of 'participant' ribbons at some events sometime in the near future :D

2001 intense tracer frame with fox vanilla R
100mm fox vanilla RL forks
mavic 317 wheels on LX hubs
older XT rear mech with deore shifter
LX hollowtech cranks, 36t front ring and 545 pedals
deore hydro brakes, centrelock discs
easton bars/stem
diatech sealed headset
weighs 13.4 according to the bathroom scales, but i doubt id notice if it was as low as 10kg or as high as 20 :p

i'm not real happy with the fasttrak pro tyres, they seem very squirmy to my untrained senses. might have to have a shot at something a little better suited to looser surfaces and see if its actually the tyre or just a case of me having to get used to not being on the road

Hey Hugor - for interest sake what yr model is the bike?
Its a 2008..the last year of the 6.6. It has been replaced by the Tracer VP this year.

And any interest in trying to get the weight down a little further?
Ive thought about removing the bottle cradle bolts that I don't use, removing every second spoke and maybe the saddle!

No on a serious note, I could lighen it up a fair bit with a set of Fulcrums or Mavics, or a Vanilla fork; but i think if i continue racing I'll just build a dedicated racing bike like a Spider FRO.
I still love cranking the Talas out to 160mm and ploughing the local downhill trails on weekends as well. Until last week I had a 500g Crankbrothers hydrolic seatpost but it blew an oil seal. The bike is built to be fun too.

Lets face it I'm 6'1" and 100kgs. There's much cheaper ways to lighten things up. I race socially only and generally finish in the middle of the pack. Thats good enough for me.

^^ I like your style Hugor. My bike is about the same weight and I have the same colour scheme. I'm also doing a few races and I reckon the bike is fine for what level I'm at. The big test will be the Angry Doctor this year.

Pro's

When fork and rear suspension balanced (ie 100mm each end) gives a stable and comfortable ride. Simple suspension design means less slop, and Pro-pedal really helps with bob thats inherent in single pivots.

Con's

Is a beast to climb (coming from a 10 kg hardtail! - although this bike weight 12.9 kg). Low BB height means hitting rocks all the time.

Future upgrades

Front brakes - the Deores were an emergency purchase after doing a lap of Glenrock sans front brake, but they are unbelievable brakes in terms of stopping power.
Rear mech - its copped an absolute beating, along with a new d' hanger
Stem - it never stays tight for more than three rides!

Blew money for upgrades on a fork service, new front tyre, BB [plus stuff for road bike]

[Apologies for poor pic quality]
