All Mountain Tyres

I've totally gone off Maxxis tyres. I've just had too many busted beads and wobbles.

My go to brand is Vittoria. The standard TNT tyres have a good combination of toughness, weight, and compounds. I like the Mota, Martello combo.

In Schwalbe I like the Magic Mary / Hans Dampf combo but the Nobby Nic / Hans Dampf is good on sandy and hard pack. The casing/weight really comes down to if you are running inserts. Rimpacts are pretty light and allow you to run much lighter casings.

Michelin are pretty much the gold standard, but they cost a fortune. The Wild Enduro line are best in class.

I won't be putting the HD on the front, it's a Super Gravity, fucking heavy!

@ozzybmx You did recommend the Vittoria pairing before, my son has the same on his Fluid. They look nice and they seem to support Jeff Lenosky who is a big unit!

IMO, try a heavy casing up front and a light casing at the rear. It sounds backwards, but can be a surprisingly good combo for the sturdier-built chap like us. Logic being, tougher front casings mean you can run low (compliant) tyres pressures and not risk snake-bite punctures and tyre squirm. Extra rotational mass is barely noticeable on the front IMO, if anything you're more likely to think the steering feeling a fraction "heavier" (slower) on quick change of direction. The lighter rear casing and more mellow tread is about 90% of the perceived "more spritely" pedalling feel you notice riding uphill, and with an appropriate amount of psi's in the rear - shouldn't snake bite unless you're really plowing sharp rocks & roots. Third benefit, aside from maybe a splash of sealant - it'll be almost no-cost to try the rear tyre up front. And something lighter/faster on the rear.

Only a few tyre dilemmas ago ;) and I believe you knocked it back on a few occasions.

I only run the DH stuff on my eeb as the motor offsets the fat knobs and supersoft rubber.

Trying to run that sort of casing or rubber on a daily rider trail bike is madness. 1300g+ tyres are for DH, Shuttles, eebs, Enduro races or trips away where you are doing big stuff and need grip and max enjoyment with no climbing urgency.

Look along the lines of <1000g tyres with a less aggressive pattern IMO.

Kenda Pinner ATC around 997g and a Kenda Regolith SCT (~827g) or Nevegal 2 ATC (~870g) rear
 
I suppose the tyres fit in here, maybe not the bike they're on, but anyway...

27.5 X 2.4, Maxxis Forekaster, TR EXO. Weighed at 838g. Used as rear tyre with Huck Norris sandwich. Lasted 585km. Run probably 2/3 of is life on road with some decent commutes in October.

Plain EXO version usually wear better than this did. There was some decent crumbling of the side knobs early on. I killed it on my last ride on the first rock garden on Cressy at the You Yang's for those that know it. I haven't ever killed a tyre on there. This one was a little unlucky I think.

It looked like the side knob was getting peeled off and when the knob flexed the sealant couldn't do it's job. I checked the inside when I took it off and nothing really noticeable.

It's been replaced with something a little beefier. Given I'm now running around 200mm travel, I figure that must be harder on the tyres, so I went up to this, and I've wanted to try one of these for a while.


27.5 X 2.4 Maxxis Dissector, 3C Maxx Terra, EXO+, TR. Weighed in at 949g. It installed easily with a spray of soapy water and a track pump. Will give it a run tomorrow.

Anyone got any good recommendations for light trail tyres? I'm a Maxxis hater and have no interest in DHF/DHR
I was running Vittoria Aggaro (and loving) as a rear but I've put holes in two of them in 2 months in rocks (Smiths Gully) so need to find something more durable. Since I'm old, soft, blind and slow I'm looking for a reasonably light tyre around 900g in 29x2.4 ish.
I'll probably dip into my stash of Michelins for another Wild AM front.
Suggestions?
 
Not direct experience but I'm about to give the Specialized Butcher / Eliminator T7 a go. Hit your weight targets in a 2.3 and pretty cheap to find locally.

Alternatively the Goodyear MTF / MTR Trail are a great, bombproof all rounder. Not light though.

Pirelli Scorpion Enduro. Hard wall R 1123gms and Pro Wall front 902gms. 2.4 go well in a variety of terrain and roll well. Wear really well too nearly 800km and still lots of life left.

My mechanic, who is very proudly anti-specialized, has been using all manner of their tyres recently because they can be found for half the price of others. Haven't heard him complain once

These were on my shortlist too but they're hard to find at a reasonable price (not full RRP that most sell at).

Even ze Germans only had stock of one or the other.
 
Unfortunately you've just missed the latest Specialized 1/2 price sales, but they seem to pop up with some regularity.

The 2.3's pretty much well size as 2.4 anyway, I've started going the T9 compound as well as I'm more likely to destroy them on rocks than wear out but I have a lot of sharp rocks on my locals, the purgatory is pretty good if you want to go lighter again - but I still prefer the Butcher / Eliminator combo.

The Vittorias are a hardier tyre than the Wild AM. The Michelin Wild Enduro Rear would be the gold standard but would be outside your weight target.

The Vittoria Martello Trail would be a good option. A little bit heavier than your target but stout.

The Hans Dampf in Super Trail would be the Schwalbe alternative.

I've had a good run with Onza Ibex TRC tires as rears.
