Confessions from the fuckwits

Someone has had a busy day!

Are those spokes more for a 26 inch sized wheel ?
27.5"

I got away with using the same length spokes for the front wheel, just not the rear wheel. I knew this would happen, which probably makes me even more of a FW 😅

I thought I could bleed a set of ancient Avid Elixir CR brakes that haven't been touched in nearly a decade and replace the finally munted pads this afternoon. And expect it to be straight forward. Just two days before setting off on a 400 km ride.

[sigh] I have learnt nothing.

After much shouting and whining...it works. But will almost certainly buy Shimano next time.

My confession tonight is thinking I could change an inner and outer shift cable in 1hr.

Pulled the old inner out, ran the new inner through the old outer.

Pulled the old outer, started pushing the new outer up from the bottom. Spent a long time (with a few different techniques and much swearing) to finally get the outer through the CS. Hard part done.

Not.

Remove the downtube split cable glands, feed the outer up through the two ports. New outer is 5mm, old was 4mm. Split glands don't fit. Somehow manage to bore them out without applying drillium to my fingers. Small win.

Oh yeah, also put a 4m ID outer end cap on at the shifter instead of a 5mm one so had to pull the inner back out and put the 5mm one on.

Stop the clock! 3.5hrs

The best thing? The carpark test has shown I can't really even notice an improvement lolz.
Back again just to add to the above.

When I tightened the derailleur cable clamp screw before shortening the cable I forgot to wind the barrel adjuster at the shifter back out so I actually have some ability to adjust the cable. I left plenty of excess so no real harm.

Tonight's job is to wind the adjuster out and re-tension the cable.

Oh man. I haven't done that for years!

It's probably worth grabbing an adult beverage of choice and finding a comfy chair whilst I relate my sad tale, not really sure how many fuckwit moments there are as I've lost count.
No sooner than I've finished enjoying my self cooked special day breakfast, the Hellion is on at me about fixing his sucked down shock. For some strange reason I thought I remembered seeing something on the idiottube where taking the air can off whilst the shock was still on the bike was a possible cheats way out to speed up the process. Not sure why I didn't want to risk sliding a feeler gauge in past the seal but anyway, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Air can comes off with a satisfying pop and at that point I realise the error of my ways as the lower hardware is wider than the end of the air can and the pressure didnt release....
At least I think I can see part of the problem, there's seems to be half a tube of slickoleum in there that's probably blocked the transfer port.

So off the bike it comes and I realise I have a conundrum,
PXL_20240811_064203088.MP.jpg
I can't get the air can far enough on to engage the threads asa there still trapped pressure in it and it wont come off unless I can get rid of the lower shock mounting, oh Fsck! Time for some quick thinking, let's use the hydraulic press to squish it back down.
Nek Minnit after a little play on the bandsaw...
Shock cauls.jpg

Some pressing is conducted and its close but no cigar, not enough squish. Damm now I'm getting told to put my toys away and get ready to go out as there's another special day surprise. Think to myself I'll sort that out during the week some time, maybe even turn up something in the lathe the same dia as the end of the aircan and slot it rather than the dodgy block of wood.
PXL_20240811_071649102.MP.jpg

Get home and I'm told bike needs to be rideable for school tomorrow Fsck! assist with getting smaller members of household to bed and then go back out to the shed. Think a bit more maybe my dodgy wooden caul will be enough to get the job done, but I need to be holding the eye of the shock and pushing downwards on the can. Hunt around in the shed for the piece of 8mm silver steel I know is somewhere to fit through the mounting, this looks promising.

Back in the press and squish a little more, jam the wedges in further.

The rest is a bit of an anti climax, take shock out of press and screw the air can back on. Push the lower mounting out with the press then put shock in the vice with the safety rag through it and undo it like I should have done at the start, another satisfying pop as it comes apart fully this time. I'm over taking photos at this point as its near midnight but when I get the air can off I find the other half of the tube of slickoleum in the negative end. Surely that has to be why it was sucking down I think (fingers crossed), anyway I clean it all out the seals look ok so a conservative amount of grease on the seals and a little bit of float fluid in the air chamber as thats what I've got and back together it goes. Press the lower mounting back in, then on the bike making sure its equalising as I pump it up. A bit of lube on the chain, tweak gears and pump up the tyres and its 1am. Too awake to sleep so look at shit on the interwebz and go to bed about 2am.

Get up this morning, load bike into car to drop off of kid and bike to the train station, when wife comes out of house and says don't worry about bike FFS... Yaaarrggghhhh

Final Fwit moment, I sit down to lunch and get my earbuds case out so I can tune out coworkers irrelevant chatter, open the case to see an empty box. Fsck... Rack my brain when did I have them last, JBL app is useless as location only works if they are connected to your phone which I know quite clerly they aren't. Then come to the realisation they are now either somewehere in the rain where I was last working on the bike or if I'm lucky on the window sill at the back of the house and out of the rain. Get home tonight and get asked what sort of a Fwit I am for leaving them out on the window sill, at least they still work.

Final shout out to the Fwits as Australia Post as the rebuild kits havent shown any movement since the 8th :(

There was loud pop, much louder than before, followed by a heart stopping crashing sound. The aircan had launched itself across the garage and through the windscreen of my wife's car. That kind of twist is often missing.

Bike building on the weekend, including the rear internally routed brake hose. Had the original hose as a guide, taped the 2 end-to-end pulled the (new to me) brake hose and caliper through....

Fucking lever hose cover 🤡

Easy fix so I pulled the hose back though with the old one still connected.

Only problem was I pulled the old hose ALL the way through (and out) of the front triangle. Thank fuck it turns out the frame has internal tubes to make routing easier.

So doubly a fuckwit for also not realising this in the first place.

Those bloody lever covers! At least you didn't hook up the hose on both ends and bleed the brakes, then realise it wasn't even on the hose.

The apartment we're staying in here in Whistler has a portable inverter sitting in the corner of the loungey area. Haven't had to use it as it hasn't been that hot and opening the windows in the evenings when we get back from the outdoors cools things down pretty quickly. Today is 33 degrees, I went for a pedal in the morning and then a swim after that. Get back to the house and turn the A/C on... Yup definitely blowing some nice cool air...
Go have a shower and whatever, come back and mon is on the couch watching something and complaining about how hot it is...yeah yeah give it time it's only small unit.
I go over to it and notice the 5" hotside flexible duct that appears to be going behind the couch to what I assume is an outlet duct...
10mins later yeah it's not really getting any cooler, investigate outlet duct and notice hot air pumping up from behind the couch...it's attached to a rectangular plate that is coincidentally the same size as the closed window it is sitting on the floor Infront of....ahhh let's try opening the window and jamming the plate into the hole...much better...
Equal parts hot air and equal parts cold air pumping into a room don't make much difference to comfort levels....
Glance at the room instructions "make sure you jam the thingy in the window before you turn on the A/C fuckwit"

First trail of the day, decided to hit the fastest, roughest in the place.
Half way down, loose the chain, jamming it in between the cranks and chain guide. Couldn't get it out or even spin the cranks. Tried getting the cranks off, but didn't have the pretention tool. Couldn't remove the chain. Walked out of the trails for the first time ever!

Why did all this happen?
Left the clutch off after washing the bike last time! Fuckwit
