COVID-19: who’s going full doomsday prep on this?

Does anyone know exactly what the rules in Victoria are regarding leaving the house for a ride?

I'm keen to go for a pedal alone, but its a 30 min drive. It seems pretty clear that exercising alone is allowed. But exercising that involves having to drive there?

I hope everyone's doing alright in these crazy times.

I'm a junior doctor working in a small rural hospital. I live onsite and there are 2 houses with juniors in them. I understand I can hang out with my housemates under these current restrictions. But can I see my friends/co-workers in the other house from time to time? We work very closely during the day so it seems kinda silly that we can't sit on the same deck or have dinner togethor after our shift and debrief over a beer.

These are stressful times for us and it'd be awesome to be able to unwind without feeling guilty/getting fined/ending up in the newspaper bringing the hospital into disrepute.

I don't really want to ask this at work, because technically we should be avoiding any non-essential social interactions.

Nup.. Supposed to exercise locally and it’s not whole day affair either. But a bit of common sense would tell you mtbing is very different than running along the beach or the tan.. Reckon you be fine, it the cops pull you over just say you were heading to the bike store for repairs..

No in Victoria and NSW. Each state is slightly different. You basically can’t socialise with anyone who doesn’t live in your house. There is a list around with the 4 reasons you can leave your house, from memory it’s for food, to exercise with 1 other person, for medical/essential appoints and for work that can’t be done at home.

Nope. Not classed as essential travel to drive to where you're riding.

TLDR? don’t go please.

I had a long planned morning at a local 30 min drive away the morning after stage 3 came in.
I loosely interpreted the directives to exercise and stay local as it should be ok. 30 minutes. Drive is kinda local I supposed.
I woke up and agonised wether I should go. In the end dirt won out.
So I drove the 30 min and deliberately rode fairly tame trails.
I enjoyed being out but I couldn’t shake the very real feeling I shouldn’t have been there.

I shouldn’t have been driving unnecessarily.
I shouldn’t have filled up petrol unnecessarily.
I shouldn’t have been putting myself at risk on the trails. Tame trails but what if a kangaroo jumped out or something. You never know.

And I shouldn’t have been putting myself in a position that if I did have an off I’d be wasting the valuable time of the emergency services to extract me and more importantly I could also be taking up a hospital bed and resources from someone else that really needed it.

The message ‘stay at home’ kept echoing through my head the whole ride.

So I finished my ride and drove home a bit embarrassed with my bike on the back and decided I will only do bike paths until this is over.

No bud! If anything you should do everything you can to avoid each other. If you can reduce transmission between healthcare workers at all you should.

Yup , if possible stay away from each other - "one down , your all down" - and your risk level is high .

Hmm. Passing heavy breathy sweating people - no room on a bike path to swing out 1.5m :( Just hold your breathe I guess!

Poor thing. Get a trainer if it bothers you that badly. You're working from home anyway. Just stay locked up in your little world
