Saw a truck diff in our workshop that had had that happen a few years back. From memory, customer self-serviced his truck, overfilled the diff oil, and drove on a line-haul freeway job first-up. The diff oil aerated, then overheated and basically turned into tar and was no longer able to lube the bearings. Input bearing got so hot the input shaft (about 3.5" diameter of good quality cast iron) got so hot the yoke twisted off and the truck threw the driveshaft (cue lots of things underneath the truck getting dented by the flailing tailshaft too). Workshop guys eventually extracted the diff head and sat it in a 44 gallon drum filled with diesel for about three days to try and thin down the "oil" to see if the diff carrier housing could be salvaged (by customer request). About a week later the diff "oil" (tar) had started to move and "pour" out of the housing, but it'd only moved about two inches in all that time... By that stage everyone was well over the stench of burnt diff oil and customer was told he could take it home or it was getting scrapped. A new diff was ordered and installed, and oil filled to the correct level! Too much can be just as bad as not enough...

Uninsured and unregistered hence the trade plate. Son's mate works nearby, I had a few pics within minutes of ohoh. Could have been the 348 replica, then I would be smiling.

I note with interest that noone has said “gosh, I hope the occupants are ok”

who am I kidding? That beauty, if it’s genuine, is irreplaceable. RIP F40

Except the pictures have a sram 1x on it. Either way, sorta tempting - I might want a Xc bike for just logging miles around Sparrow without getting gnarly when I’m healed enough to start working on fitness...
