Looking at the price to performance ratio the new manufacturers are delivering, I can only think how pissed the legacy guys must be.

They would have trickled out deliberately slow cars and made you pay handsomely to get some extra beans. Now you can get a $60-something-k car that accelerates like a supercar from not so long ago and I guess they'll be forced to come at least vaguely close.
Their fault. Pretty much how the model 3 got to be mainstream. By buy a M3 when you can get a plaid for much less?

It absolutely annoyed me how manufacturers deliberately hold out on power.

Their fault.
Oh totally.

I mean you used to pay extra for two main things really, more power and more toys.

Now all these new cars come with all the luxuries and the grunt.

Which leaves the legacy guys with basically badge snobbery, maybe build quality, maybe better handling? But if they do have those last two advantages, it won't be for long.

I have to say for one thing its great for the people who go into trades, Automotive Trade is being offered as dual certs at the moment Electrical and Mechanical all in 4 years.
In Qld they have the apprenticeship in pure electrical vehicles 3 years.

99% of folks have no idea when it comes to cars. People don't care about suspension or handling and besides EVs are better due to CoG so that's one to EVs. As for quality, most also have no clue and perceived quality as perceived reliability and/or features. As for EVs, it's realyl a guessing game so that is more or less neutralised - toyota could make an EV tomorrow I don't think the public perception of reliability would be as strong as their ICE cars for example. Badge snobbery is real but I rekon for the mainstream, the recent success of kia/hyundai has softened a bit. So really it comes down to badge snobbery. I guess time will tell if the Chinese can overcome this (lets face it their marketing departments could do with an overhaul), but what they do have going for them is performance. You can be a badge snob, but when that chinese EV is destroying you at the lights each and every time it starts to make you ask questions.

At least you can see the dust, EVs have loads of little aerodynamic creases and gaps for dust to sit. Door sills on BYD and Tesla springs to mind.
Our shack is at the end of a 4 km dirt road and the new Atto is absolutely covered in dust after a run. Old (2018) raw 4 didn't notice it half as much and it was black! Is v. quiet though.

Even the Tesla boys complain, those sills are dust, mud and road grime magnets.

Yes, the future for the old school mechanic is nearing the end and will go the way of the blacksmith and farrier. Just a specialised niche market.
I wouldn't want a long-term franchise on a Midas muffler shop in the coming years.

To be fair they died off since manufacturers started using stainless systems in most mainstream stuff!

The more I see of this thing the more of a missed opportunity I think it is. The Rivian is so much more clever and practical, just suffers from price and quality problems.
