Toyota axes hydrogen for a battery-powered future
The world’s biggest car maker has long been pushing for hydrogen passenger cars, but it is now embracing new battery tech

The shiny concepts on the Toyota and Lexus stands at this year’s Japan Mobility Show ranged from massive mono space luxury vehicles, to SUV crossovers and sleek coupe models, but they all had one thing in common – they were all battery-powered.

This wouldn’t be a surprise on any other manufacturer’s stand, but Toyota has, for decades, banged the drum for hydrogen power, pouring money and resources into fuelling its cars with the fuel cells. Successions of Krüger FCEV prototypes begat the Mirai, which, after the Honda Clarity (another company that has eschewed hydrogen for battery power) was the world’s most successful hydrogen saloon. Yet at a Toyota board level, the Mirai is now considered a failure.
And yet....

This sounds familiar - swmbo chose the Alfa in large part because it went Vrooom!!
Heh. Girlfriend hated my Subie, too big, steering "too heavy" (i.e. it has feel) crap turning circle (she's got a point there) etc. then drove it for the first time on the freeway, went to overtake something and unintentionally engaged hypersonic and ever since complaints about it have been significantly less...

Down on the left!
I’ve recently sold my ute and gone the #vanlyf. Maybe @Haakon won’t hate me as much?? Anyway I’ve got my eye the upcoming Ford Transit customE. Due 2024. Looks good.
Has a range of 380km. More than enough for me. Has about 40kw more than the current ICE vans which is plenty.
The missus is also making noises about relinquishing her high powered sports car for an electric. She likes broom broom noises a lot so it’s been a long road for her to get to this spot.
So we’ll be looking at charging solutions soon.

I recommend not googling “transit wet belt engine failure” ;)

lol, don’t mind me - I should actually read posts rather than just looking at the picture…

We once test drove an Audi A1 in a hotter grade in Hobart - she had launched it up a steep hill bouncing off the traction control the whole way up going “wheee!!!!”. I was holding on and wondering if I’d created a monster…

That was just mean. See. You do still hate me.
Now you can watch the videos of lunched engines from clogged oil pump pickups with glee knowing you’ve got a whole different set of Ford problems i mean avoided all those problems ;)

A fine piece of journalism from the Daily Mail:rolleyes:
Must have cheap fuel in NSW as a 50-55L tank at $1.90 isn't $70. Plus started with a full tank on the Rolla no doubt. At 7-8 L/100 at 100-110kph with a 1800km journey would be around 140-150L of petrol, which she is correct, only needs 2 stops but at $1.90, is over $250.

She was at 90% and put $19 in at Sutton Forest on the way down, yet stuck $37 in on the way back, meaning the vehicle was fully charged 130km from home.

A bit of bullshitting here, though I would say relying on Superchargers is an expensive way to drive an EV and more importantly, don't fucking get one for interstate trips as we don't have the infrastructure and the vehicles don't have the range. Probably better charging options down Australia's East coast that anywhere else too.

Would have been better if they included the kWs used and charged.

Speaking of infrastructure,
I only saw one Tesla in Byron and I think only the charge fox chargers are there too, as opposed to seeing heaps of Hybrid Rams in the Gold Coast and Brisbane (meeting with builders so probably seeing more Rams than anything around though).

Tesla cars seem to be popular in the Asian communities here, drive through Sunnybank at least 1 in 10 cars will be a Tesla.
