Injuries. What's your story?

Labral tear on my hip is what did me in. It took years to be properly diagnosed, by which time the pain was off tap, as was the painkiller use...
I can just imagine. My shoulder has been frustrating the life out of me for about a month now. And truth be told has had me feeling pretty low; my three activities of working out, riding and playing musical instruments are no longer open to me.

After a year of it, especially with no clear diagnosis I'd be on whatever I found worked, legal or otherwise.

Took about 6 years of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatments, escalating pain and activity curtailment before I finally found someone to properly identify the issue.

I don’t recommend it. Count yourself lucky you know what’s wrong early!!

One month has been long enough for me. I've been astounded by how long it can take and how many specialists one needs to see before getting to the crux of it.

I'm hoping to dodge surgery as I really don't know what I'm going to do over 9 months off the bike. I'll be like a novice rider again, gripped by fear.

Is back!
Over 9 years I've gained a lot of cuts/scars on my legs, done an AC joint, a few finger dislocations- all entertaining at the time but nothing really to speak of.
Yesterday we went to the You Yangs and heard our riding buddy bite the dust on rocks on track 14. I actually heard his shoulder break on impact on the basalt! It was a bit unpleasant and the graze was worse. Nasty nasty graze.
What's your story?
My list is 3 x separated AC on one shoulder
5 x cracked ribs
Numerous concussions
Nasty off resulting in a whole thigh black/purple bruise
One completely snapped off-at-the-spine floating rib that's still floating around there somewhere
And the best one was two broken and displaced metacarpals, one dislocated knuckle where it meets the hand, at the same time I burst my liver in two places and the adrenal behind it plus collapsed my right lung. Two lots of surgery including k-wires in the hand means I've lost half the use of that hand and I did all this whilst I was living with undiagnosed cancer.
Oh and fibromyalgia.
No brain, no pain they tell me :D

Yeah didn’t tickle. That’s just from one pin. There’s another 4 holes further up the leg out of photo shot.
That’s on top of the holes I’ve accumulated over the years previous.
Thee should be a picture ceasefire during the lunch break like no gross stuff between 11.45am to 2.00PM :D

No more short frilly summer dresses for you fella!
That was never an option for me with my skinny white legs covered in ranga hair.

Walks the walk
I fucked my left rotator cuff 9 years ago, 6 or so dislocations, had the surgery, recovered pretty good. I did the physio.

I have very 'mobile' shoulders as the specialist said. The right one half came out a few years back, did the physio and it's ok but not 100%. I've done over two years of boot camp workouts twice a week and the shoulders have benefited. I did bouldering for the first and last time recently, an awkward over stretch undid some if the work on the left which has led to favouring the right.

I've never hurt myself badly on the bike (touching wood), the shoulders were both skateboard injuries, also left one half popped falling off a kneeboard around 20 years old. Bike accidents needing medical attention were splitting the side of my ball sack on the top tube at 5 while trying to walk the bike down the front stairs, and snapping a pedal bunnyhopping off a curb at 16 or so where the stump of the pedal dug a nice chunk out of my leg. A few stitches in each.

I think with the rotator cuff, surgery really is the option to take from what I've read.

It's just the months off doing none of the things I like. I suppose it's enough time to dust off the Spanish again...

Old and hopeless
I’ve done both rotator cuffs, with my right shoulder being much worse with a decent supraspinatus tear too. I have avoided surgery, because I don’t trust them, as they are just mechanics of the human body, and some are onto it, and others are rubbish, but it’s a crap shoot. This is from personal experience, after a pretty average surgical result for my left hip, with its femoral impingement, totally torn off labrum and glued in cartilage. In contrast to this, my right knee reconstruction was amazing. Anyway, back to the shoulders, I’ve had a few ultrasound guided cortisone jabs in my right shoulder, which has been great, and has made it tolerable. OK, I can’t really put my right arm up high, think standing room train loop holder thingos, or I can’t serve for shjt anymore in tennis, and I had a pretty decent serve back in the day. But, me, I’d avoid the knife, get the jab and do good physio. Then see how it goes.

I’d back this. You’ve caught it early and I’d look at avoiding surgery. Labral tears are a little controversial with many thinking they usually don’t need “repairing” and proper management will keep the joint happy.

Mine had been let go too long and a few attempted therapies for things that were not actually the problem made it worse and I was in so much pain I was a bit desperate for relief. You’re in a much much better place and it would be worth seriously exploring what you can do to regain function without surgery.
