i've never quite understood the sense of surgically removing the throat nodes of your immune system when the fact that they are red and swollen means they're doing their job, protecting your body from further infection? (i had tonsillitis a few times as a older child, no fun at all)
:D
They don't like to do it anymore and only do it in extreme cases which is why you need it a number of times to qualify. The minimum is like 5 in a year or 8 in 2 years for the specialist I saw. They weren't doing their job properly because there's no way I could have gone my 20 years without a single tonsil infection then get 6 in the next year. As I said it was most likely a low grade infection that wouldn't go away.

would it not be an idea to look at why the immune system is flaring up, rather than simply excise the symptom (the tonsils) and risk complications from surgery, ie: bleeding at the site, post-surgical infection, and the aftermath of having a general anaesthetic, hoping the cause of the flare-up will go away once the tonsils are removed??
No, I don't have time for him to look around for the issue, considering removing them fixes it all together and gets me back to work. There are more nodes in your neck and even with the complications for me it is still worth it.

all i can say is i personally had a regular round of tonsillitis, bronchitis, and pleurisy from pre-puberty to mid-teens, and once i'd moved out of home away from chain-smoking adults, made time for a hell of a lot more exercise, and began to eat a diet full of fresh food, i never had trouble with those three issues again.
I rarely smoke, work as a carpenter so never short of exercise and eat a reasonable diet. I talked to the specialist as he is a lot smarter then me and is one of the most recommended for tonsillitis in my area. He didn't straight away jump in and say "SURGERY IS THE ONLY WAY" he recommended it but also gave me a few warnings. Warnings like it will be extremely painful and take a couple of weeks to heal.

I know you like to argue for the sake of arguing but let this one go karen :)

not for the sake of arguing, so much, i just hate to see people told there is no other way. consult a surgeon, he's gonna recommend surgery...that's a no-brainer. and you know i've had to resort to surgery myself, because there was no other way and i had explored as many other avenues as i could find.

still, have you been doing your salt-andwater gargles? how's the bleeding now?

Wasn't actually told to do salt water gargles but using a bit of listerine anyway. Bleedings fine, think it was actually my adnoids bleeding as he removed them as well. Only bled for a few hours.

I never had a problem with tonsilitis growing up however on one of many trips to Japan in mid winter I picked up a very very sore throat so with much reluctance went to a local doctor. Bear in mind this isn't Tokyo or even a big city, little local area so no Western doctors or any who "speak a the England". With colleague who had a translator in hand we went into the consulting room. First I was sitting on a chair and the doctor was standing on a stool to look down my throat. That didn't work so we swapped places! Tonsilitius from the heavy cigarette smoke in the meeting rooms was the diagnosis. I am not now and never have been a smoker so it was just my body sayng enough already. Well you get a pill for the pain, a pill for the swelling, a pill to boost antibodies, a pill for the pills etc. At least I wasn't in France. The doctor started asking me if I had trouble eating and then started laughing and finished by saying a couple of days without food wouldn't hurt. Bastard.
