MTB shoes

I prefer the following characteristics in an MTB shoe

  • When clipped I want max stiffness for power transmission and improved platform on the pedals

  • When clipped I want more stiffness then a flat shoe, but I’m not a roadie.

  • When on flats I prefer stiffness to grip, but grip is still important. Walking is for whimps

  • When on Flats I prefer max grip, but prefer to be able to walk when not pedalling.

  • When on Flats I want max grip and moderate stiffness. Goldilocks

  • I don’t wear shoes, the leather soles of my feet grip nice

Is it just me, or do they look like platforms?

I bought a pair of Impact Pros on special, which are not even as thick as those.

One ride was enough for me to sell them.

Felt so disconnected from the pedals as the sole is so thick and stiff

Bit the bullet and bought a pair of these a while ago, they certainly fit the bill, so far about 150kms in them and they do stick like shit to a blanket, albeit a bit too sticky at some points (got my foot too far across the pedal at one point and rubbing on the cranks whilst going downhill), paired with the Diety Tmacs and Atlas pedals on the other bike.
Comfortable and wide enough for my feet even with the humid temps of Qld tablelands.
All in all a good result, will be interesting to see how long they last.

So I was in the Dirty Bikes LBS at Taipei and thought it was time to get my long lost flat pedal mojo back. I just ran out of thingys that I needed so had to do something.

Wanted shoes that weren't expert looking mid cut booty things nor too hard not to walk around it. Nothing too weird, just bike shoes. I tried a few pairs and the GF4s felt the best overall. They fit well around the toe and instep but not too super padded to overheat, hopefully. All the Shimano shoes I've had in the past felt good and were a no nonsense but usually unsexy option.

They hang onto the pedal laterally really well. Now I just have to unlearn and keep my foot on the pedals upward and downwards. I could do it fine once  Only gripe so far is that the laces seem to loosen up too quickly.

Well after 'only' about 15 years of fairly constant use the old SPD shoes were starting to go, one heal was worn and uncomfy and the ratchet straps were starting to go. Given the longevity of the last pair I've gone with SIDI's again - Sized up for my wide feet and they seem pretty good. Will have to get used to the twisty stringy thing and the fact that they call these 'gravel' shoes (look like my Old MTB shoes in all ways really). The cleats on the old ones might have been there for a while as when trying to unclip this morning I nearly had a stack as they are significantly tighter than before, I may have gotten used to a fairly..... casual..... style of unclipping.

Ok, I’m in the market for some new flat pedal shoes.
I currently have some 2FO Roosts that I like but are a touch narrow and cramping across the ball of my foot. I could probably go a size bigger but feel my heel would come out of the shoe when I pedal.

I like the look of Five Tens but as they’re adidas they’re probably narrow, same with Giro

Anyone any recommendations for shoes that run on the wider size I can give a try?

I like a shoe with a wider toe box and run the Adidas/Five Ten Impacts. Similarly I didn't like the 2fo shoes and ended up giving them away after waiting a few rides hoping they would stretch in.

I went up half size and they fit pretty well, plebty of grip, comfortable to wear all day, and currently a pretty crisp price.

Interesting. Might have a look and see. Have they been redesigned since Adidas bought them?

I wear these after looking for similar in a shoe.
Got two pairs on rotation due to the price, 600km-ish in each and the soles still look fine apart from where the front sits on the pedal, you can see where I 'get grip' going downhill.

Are your 2FO Roosts the current iteration?

I bought some 2FO DH clips in 2020, and they have had a re-design in the last year or two. slightly wider toebox, I think. I tried the new version on and the toebox and forefoot seem a bit wider.

Found the 2FO shoes a little narrow also. Tried the 5Ten/Adidas and found them to be the same so ponied up again for the allegedly wider version and half a size bigger. I seriously think they were smaller than the first ones so they didn't work out for me. I then tried the new Crankbrothers flat pedal shoes and I'm now on my third pair (just bought them for $99 shipped from Berwick Cycles), Great shoes. They have a little more give than the 2FO and the 5Tens and so feel much more normal to walk in. Grip wise they are about an 8/10 with my T-Macs (2FO and 5Ten about 9/10).

Not a weight weenie shoe indeed.

Highly recommended CrankBrothers Mallet Lace. The best shoes I have EVER owned, by a mile and I've had/have a lot of shoes.
Ozzy, are they the normal lace Mallet clip-in, or the new one with speed laces and velcro strap?

How does the CB sizing compare to Spesh and shimano - assuming you've worn those brands too?

I am slightly too big in the foot for a 44 Specialized 2FO, but the 45 is a bit roomy.
In Shimano road and MTB shoes I am definitely a 45.

the Shimano, Spesh and Crack Brothers size charts aren't exactly standardised though, which is a pain in the bum.
