MTB shoes

I prefer the following characteristics in an MTB shoe

  • When clipped I want max stiffness for power transmission and improved platform on the pedals

  • When clipped I want more stiffness then a flat shoe, but I’m not a roadie.

  • When on flats I prefer stiffness to grip, but grip is still important. Walking is for whimps

  • When on Flats I prefer max grip, but prefer to be able to walk when not pedalling.

  • When on Flats I want max grip and moderate stiffness. Goldilocks

  • I don’t wear shoes, the leather soles of my feet grip nice

As an aside, it shits me to tears that people/companies use language like this: some products naturally don't make the Australian line.

There is nothing natural about it. It's a business decision.

Naturally, water flows down hill. Due to a cost benefit analysis, some specialised products don't get shipped to Australia.
What a load of shit by Spesh, and companies like them. I liked their shoes, and bought a bunch of them over the years, as well as helmets and gloves, but I'm not paying top dollar for something that doesn't fit properly.

CrankBrothers shoes on sale at HiBike.

If you are a subscriber, they sent a 10 euro off voucher tonight.

Still one of the cheapest shipping at 22 euros.

In recent times, some here have experienced HiBike charging more for shipping after paying for your items, not sure if they are still doing that.

For those wanting a MTB shoe with wider toe box - https://www.instagram.com/lakecycling/
Not a bad looking shoe either

Unless Lake Au has improved, the Australian importer was abysmal and the shoes which did come here were in 1 basic colour and in short supply, worse than SIDI as at least they had a good supply... of black.

They used to be my favourite shoe brand back 2010'ish and I ended up with quite a few pairs in different models, all XC style and all bought international.

Here goes @fjohn860 ! Your recommended brand wasn't in Bunnings the other night when I went in, and this was the only small tube available that I knew the brand name on. I spent a bit of time building fish tanks as a uni student and if this can hold that sort of pressure I'm feeling good about it on the shoes...

Here's a comparison for you of my mid-season snowboarding boot save. I have never peeled a sole off a boot before, I usually pull the lacing system out of the boot well before that happens. Once the sole comes off it is usually irreparable. This lasted me about 3 weeks of solid use. I'm so cocky about it I am not replacing the boots before NZ. Or I'll be replacing them in NZ.

Yeah it's a bit too specialist for the bunnings shelves unfortunately.

The tank glue should get you out of trouble as proven by your snow boarding boot save.

Oh no, that snow boot repair was done using the "world's strongest glue"! And another that google couldn't translate. It's a real work of art.

All outdoor boots and shoes that get wet will eventually start to come apart at the soles.

Bumping this up.
Been riding with some of the Older 510 Impacts and Vans BMX Platform (harder wearing soles/orthopedic foot-bed editions) when not exclusively on the bike.
I bought some Ride Concepts about a year ago now thinking they would wear in, but they are still tight around the top of my foot and dont feel the greatest.
The 510s and Vans seem wider even with the shoe soles pressed bottom to bottom and the Ride Concepts Seemingly the same size?
So I am after something to replace the Impacts/Vans, an all mountain shoe, it doesn't have to be super wide but just a bit of a wide enough base. In hiking shoes my feet don't do to well with most of the Salomons due to their thinness but Merrells (standard fits) are fine and Keen is probably borderline on too wide.

Now seems people say the 510's are thinner now they have been bought out, so I was thinking along the lines of:
Or anyone who has any other good recommendations on shoes?
Etnies seem to be a bit tight from what I have in their skate shoe range, the Marana Mid Cranks.

Had the old 5:10 Freerider high tops. Perfect fit for me, and a comfy all-day wear. I tried some Ride Concepts (mid/high tops, can't remember the model name). The toe box was so narrow (at the base of the laces/where my toe knuckles are) it actually hurt after 10 minutes or so. Tried wearing them around the house a few times to bed them in but it wasn't even close to working, so sold em on. Got some Unparallel West Ridge (also high tops), they are a very good fit in the toe-box and overall quite similar to the old 5:10's, but the sole feels oddly different. The ol' 5:10's felt like a standard Globe/Osiris skate shoe from back in the day, but the West Ridge feel like they have a softer main sole (it is definitely a softer, grippier rubber) but with a harder outer perimeter? Sort of like the side edge of the sole holds the sole flat but the main portion of the sole is more flexible... They're not as comfy or practical for walking around like the old Freeriders, but are slightly grippier on the pedals when riding (though are getting hacked out much faster accordingly sadly).

Perfect, I have the same issue with the toe box being a bit too slim, thought a few rides would bed them in but seems the BMX vans have won out in comfort even though they are pretty soft. I agree the old 510's are like Globes which were super roomy back in the day. Even the New Balance Skate shoes seem nice and wide these days.
Will place an order for the Unparallel shoes today, thanks for the advice Doctor

Depending what size you are I could do a deal on mine?
They are the all black Ride Concepts Livewire Flat Shoes.
They are decent but just trying to find the right fit for bike shoes especially buying online is a bit of a pain. Esp the Canberra market, no half sizes of the 2FO that people recommend locally makes it a harder decision.

I have RC wildcats (?) and have wide feet. I wore them around the house for a few days and they came good width wise.

I quite like them now

I'm on my 3rd pair of Ride Concept's Hellion elite. Seem to get about 12months out of them, but guess it depends how much and what sort of riding you do. Can't comment on the others but seem to always find these on sale and grip is good, nice and stiff as well as some decent protection.
Don't seem to be destroying the soles as quickly as the Leatt shoes I had before these, and the five tens before those, but still end up wearing grooves in them eventually.
I bought some half price FiveTen impacts the other day so hopefully don't hate them this time around, short memory's and what not...

Adding another thought into the mix, check out the Afton Cooper shoes. Bloody great grip, good balance of stiffness and feel, and after a small break-in period at the start have become my go-to shoes. I won't be going back to Freerider Pros, which were my go-to trail & Enduro shoes for many years.

I've since grabbed another pair for when these wear out. The Aftons have been on every ride since I got them (bar a few with the CS below) and only just starting to show sole wear after 2 years.

Now, for full disclosure is that my first pair were free for review https://tyresandsoles.com/2021/10/02/afton-cooper-more-exciting-than-an-80s-soap-star/), but I still won't give aglowing review if somethign is shit.

i.e. if you asked me to review the MTBD Cleanskin Flat shoes I bought around the same time, I could tell you that they're cheap. Very cheap. That's their only good part. As soon as you get into anything technical, the MTBD CS shoes have no support, limited grip and bounce around everywhere. But then when they're $80 at full whack and can be had as low as $40 when on special, I was probably hoping for a unicorn fart for them to be a match for better shoes!

The CS have had the most wearing ever in the last 6 weeks. I broke my elbow into a few pieces 6 weeks ago and couldn't do up laces, so the Velcro was super handy to use these as my daily shoes! Oh wait, that's another Pro - Easy to wear when you can't do up your laces!

I haven't tried either the RC or UP though.
