Mystic MTB - Bright

I love rickety old chairlifts! The wild ride some of them provide, the nostalgia/history, and the lack of safety all aid in pumping up the mojo! Most of them also seem to access the best terrain.

Sounds pretty promising for the Park.
Yeah, I certainly like this idea, rewards are always good for a trail day:
They also want to ramp up volunteer trail building, as it was the genesis of Mystic. There has always been an appetite for it in Bright, but it has become more difficult with some of the new management models.

“We have said we will run some training courses and get volunteers out there and then reward them with access and uplifts and other things — similar to what we do at Maydena. We’re really keen to build that community again,” he says
And the streamlining of costs, as it is an expensive exercise, especially with limited accomodation in the Bright area, that seems to have seasonal pricing especially in school holidays.
“We’ve definitely said that we will hold the day pass costs the same as a worst-case scenario, and we’re looking at options to make the membership more effective. We’re looking at options where we can streamline family memberships, bundle things up, and make it a bit simpler and hopefully cheaper to ride,” he says. “There is no escaping that it costs a lot (to run a bike park), and we are proposing a lot more trails than what’s there at the moment.”
....

“Ultimately, we’re trying to provide the best riding experience, and that’s not a cheap thing to do. But, we do need to make it as cost-effective as possible because we don’t want to exclude people because they can’t afford to ride at Mystic — that’s not good for anyone,” he says.

I think this is a positive move. Maydena is a pretty slick operation, if they are able to offer anything close to that it will be a win.

Given the unique circumstances of timber harvesting, and constant renewal of trails in those areas i suspect a commercial operation is really the only way forward.

It's a trail network that has some excellent trails, but as a whole is probably not that exciting, worth the money or worth trip more than once a year or so. There's certainly been some improvement recently, but the rest of the broader network of trails outside Hero/Shred certainly needed some TLC.

One of the best parts of Maydena is the massive diversity of high quality trails for people of a variety of levels. A full day pass isn't cheap, but is pretty easily justifiable given the quality of the offering. Hopefully they'll be able to keep Bright prices in the ballpark.

This could be the future of serious prime mountainbiking if the govt funding model declines and volunteers cant do enough.
It works in Rotorua but the rebuilding tracks after logging doesnt sound very efficient, OTOH there are no vegetation offsets.
Building the Yack Epic thru the bush involved govt funding to pay another arm of govt $300K + for offsets which will prolly never happen , pretty stupid really considering the amount of bush.

Was ready to bag this out, but it seems to be making sense. Some more family friendly green trails and flow trails, ability to get single lifts offset with dedicated jump trails and still have some harder tech etc. I know on Gavelburn we like to bag out the dumbing down of the gnar but that's whats going to bring in the punters. If they do this and have trails that make sense and have themes (i.e. make it a flow trail / jump trail / tech etc and stick with it) there is room for all riding types, which hopefully includes some harder stuff, but sign it as such and hopefully the enduro bros will keep of it. You wont have a mountain that is all double blacks but hopefully it can run at a profit and actually get maintained as well as providing something for everyone. That is something I'd pay a premium for.

Seems I'm feeling optimistic today, no doubt I'll flip back to my normal state of mind and bag this out later

I wonder how many places world wide have chairlifts only for mtbiking not for skiing as well ?
Pretty sure I've ridden them all... the only lift serviced bike park I've ridden is Thredbo.
Rotorua is one I know of, also super good value. Less than $10 a lift to get to the top & combined it with a run on the luge to finish off the day.
Mountain Bike Park - Skyline Rotorua
Queenstown is another that doesn't cater for skiing ( a heap of other stuff up top for non-riders though).

Thanks for the positivity.

We do have a very comprehensive and well-considered plan for Mystic (hence how we won the contract). In saying that though, we are taking our time to undertake A LOT of consultation so that we can focus our investment and attention in the right places.

We will announcement soon, but we are planning a lot of new trail, with a really diverse trail style that should offer something new for everyone. While we need to tick off some really cool beginner flow trails early on, we’ll be working on a bunch of really cool technical single track at the same time.

As far as we are aware there is really only two parks globally that have a lift with the primary purpose of MTB-

Christchurch Adventure Park (NZ)
Spider Mountain (Texas, USA)

We are working on a couple of other lift assisted MTB focused operations, but nothing in Australia. The Whitsundays Skyway project will have a bike park and gondola, but it’s still primarily a general tourist site (like the Skyline parks in NZ).

A lift may be on the cards one day in Mystic (could also be a ground based lift), but it’s not in the current plans.

Queenstown is another that doesn't cater for skiing ( a heap of other stuff up top for non-riders though).
