Clearly there is some big frame developments coming that we haven't seen yet. Rearward wheel paths are history! Sideways is here now...
If they can move rearwards to get out of the way of bumps, I can see how sideways axle paths would be of benefit. The only question is, do I want left or right? If it's on the wrong side for a given trail, does that mean the wheel sometimes moves towards the path of the obstacle?

That's where the latest in rim technology comes into play. We call it integrated rim flex. It allows your wheel, when correctly built, to actively morph over, around, and even under obstacles it makes contact with while traveling on a centrifugal ellipses in a clockwise direction.
