Pets / Dogs in an Apartment?

Careful research is indeed needed before you commit to a pet for the duration of its life.
Hooray for dogs, got an amazing rescue mutt sleeping with his head on my stomach (and he's a bloody large beast) but have you considered cage pets? I have a guinea pig and two rats - species separated of course - and rats are great. They're like super miniature dogs with monkey tendencies. They're very friendly, intelligent, clean, and lack the 8+ year life span. They're easily trained and don't bark or have accidents all over the house. They're cool animals.

Actual baby Pygmy Hippo. Baby. Pygmy. Hippo.

Bloody adorable, you can't really get a sense of scale from this pic but he would have stood less then 30cm tall.

Except that they stink to high heaven and their fleas can carry bubonic plague.

A rock is a quiet, no nonsense pet, unlike my dog who can't decide whether she's a human or a cat. Have you thought about a cockatiel tho, they seem to be friendly, adaptable and most importantly containable in a unit.

Or you could get into Bonsai plants.

Nonsense. Weekly cage cleanouts with disinfectant (as with all surfaces in any house) and good, absorbent litter such as Max's, never stinky. My guinea pig's cage is much more offensive than my rats.
Besides the fact that not even wild rats carry the plague. It hasn't been recorded in Australia since 1925.
You are unfortunately misinformed.

the plague comment was tongue-in-cheek, don't get your knickers in a twist :) i personally find rat smell musty and offensive tho others might not. rabbits and hamsters, on the other hand, don't bother me at all.

Just to revive an old thread, we made the decision and we have our new pooch since mid Feb.

He has settled in as one of the family, and to be honest we couldnt be without him now.
First few months can only be described as torture, puppies are hard bloody work.

The issues highlighted in this thread regarding having a dog in an apartment proved to be non-issues with us, thats not to say it would be the same for everyone.
We spend a lot of time working to ensure that the dog is happy, socialised, walked, played with and most of all (for me anyway) not lonely!

Here he is... 6 month old French Bulldog....called "Paddy"

Thanks for all your advice

Cute as mate,

If you haven't already, crate training is freaking awesome!

We take a collapsible crate everywhere with my 2 staffies. Even camping trips. When they have had enough, tired, just want to chill or its bedtime and we are pissed around a fire they will happily go to their crate by themselves.
