Sorry about butting in!Thanks for sharing that. Is the range similar to running 1 x 9 for example, or is it a bigger range with larger gaps between gears? Do you change the rear sprocket at all? Hope you don't mind the questions, but I HATE stuffing round with derailleurs, this has always appealed as a nice, neat solution, but needs a bit of an outlay up front to set up. Cheers!!
The Alfine 8 has a range equivalent to a 11-34 cassette. As Lukespook says the 8 is far more reliable and better suited to MTBing than the 11. It shifts faster and you can change under load (not full hammer load though) whereas the 11 is much more delicate and just wont cop that. Given the 8 speed is half the price the decision is easy.
