I've always approached building from a balance point of view. Power is good but not if the rest of the car isn't up to it. I guess that's what lead me from FR to 4WD(AWD). Traction is the key to speed and that's essentially what everything other than the engine serves to provide. Trans, diff, suspension, and brakes are all there so we can get that power to the ground. This is what I was aiming at in my earlier post. Too many people these days go to a workshop and want a power figure rather than a well balanced car.
This has been the case for ever in a day.....I know a couple of people who are quick over a qtr mile and have nowhere near the Hp that others they race against, but they can get their power to the ground ad their car too hook up so it doesnt matter, it's the whole package they are interested in and quick times down the qtr, who cares if they have 400/450 or 550hp if you cant get it to the ground your not going to be quick.

Same with Carbies, yeah i know old school, but too many are interested in putting the bigger double pumper or carbie on their motor and think it will make it quicker or more Hp, NO, in some cases it will make it too rich and slower....

Carbs are always interesting like that. Most people seem to massively over-carb their engine, making it slower as you said and absolutely ruining throttle response.

flycut my heads from 59cc to 54cc and went with a 1.25 ratio solid rocker setup...pumping up the comp to 9.5:1

After forever
So I ended up getting the wheels on the wife's new runabout colour coded to the front smiley insert. Came out pretty good I reckon. Grey with a touch of blue in it, depending on how the light hits it.

I use to love reading this thread.. Appears its died off a bit lately. Anyway this is my latest car, full nut and bolt resto, lots of cool stuff and drives like a dream. Took abit to adjust going from a 400hp fully setup drift car to a sub 200hp v8 cruiser but so far it's been reliable. Still a few things id like to change but its different and I like it

Anybody have any experience changing diff gears on a chevy 12 bolt? I was quoted pushing $800 by the local diff specialist, which to me means either they charge an exorbitant price, or it is a complex job.

So, anyone with experience, is it possible to do in a backyard garage, or is it the kind of job best left to the pros?

408 VG Valiant Stroker Rebuild.

Here's one of my projects i've been working on here and there.

This shell has been sitting for a bit at home, after picking it up for a song a year or so back.

In the meantime, I have built a tough 360/408 stroker engine ( second time build, blew up the first one :) ) that has been in my 4 door VG sedan the past 12 months ( pulled 565HP on the dyno before breaking a load strap on its second pull so we called it a day ) that Is going to go into the new shell.

New project is a 1971 VG Hardtop, the last car had 2 many doors! - this is basically my dream car, have wanted to do this all my life, and now the fun begins.

Just finished building my "Octisserie" which you can see in the pics gives me plenty of room to get into bits and pieces and nothing is being left alone on this build.

Plans include:

dropping in the Stroker + fresh full manual valve body 727 tranny
Rear Tubs
Rear Spring relocation
4 Link rear end
shortened fab 9" LSD diff
Disc brake front end conversion
battery relocation
Fuel cell

All this is being done by me and a few of the boys, so is going to take a few months to get her done, but in no hurry.

Allready sourced and have:

R & L full rear quarters sourced from the states
15x12" Convo Pro Rears on 31.5 Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro rubber
15x5" Convo Pro fronts on MT front runners
Series 9 RX7 Front buckets
Rest of interior is going to be standard
Full autometer fabricated dash
Full painless rewire
All new brake lines
blah blah.

This is going to be fully engineered and road registered, with a change of back wheels for the strip.

Planning for a driveable 11 second car on radials, 10's on slicks. Definately have the power allready, just have to tweak the driveline.

When i First got her home:

Stripped:

Missing the engine :)

Naked

Started on the soda/garnet blasting:

Nasty Rust - hence the full replacements of brand new sources panels from the states:

Nearly all stripped:

Very happy now:

rear arches, found some "interesting" prior repair work - i bloody hate dodgy pricks that half assed stuff, am going to replace the rear extension panels now, if i can find some, or else might have to make some new ones. Am expecting the same on the other side.

Passenger rear guard out, and fitted up.

Honestly, this wasn't too bad, around the rear screen is going to be a little bit work, but overall the quality of the panels are 8/10 in my opinion.

Spent the good part of a morning cleaning up all the welds, measuring, re-measuring and measuring again.

But then stupid me managed to put a nice fat dent right in the middle of the panel, needless to say I am not happy Jan.

Old mate Froggy will take care of that however, he's is worth is weight in gold, when he isn't drunk.

Anyways, here's the progress. If you think you don't want to tackle this job, think again, it's definately do-able if you are patient. The end result will tell us the story i guess :)
