The Mountain BUG (Bicycle User Group)
The formation of a Mtn BUG is a way for mountain bike riders of South East Queensland to have better representation. The intent is to become an umbrella group to bridge the gap between peak advocacy organisations like IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association), Bicycle Queensland and local riders.

What is a BUG?

A Bicycle User Group (BUG) brings cyclists together for all sorts of different reasons. Some BUGs are purely social, others are a way for cyclists to promote the benefits of riding. In some cases BUGs have helped improve facilities so that a workplace or local neighbourhood becomes more cycle friendly. Your BUG can be whatever you and your fellow riders want or need it to be.”Workplace BUG Guide, Bicycle Victoria.

BUGs have a well established role in providing a mechanism for riders to band together and have their say. There are many local BUGs that have specific interests such as the CBD BUG and the Airport BUG. Mountain bike riders in SEQ are a dispersed group. There are many small MTBA affiliated clubs, road clubs with members that race off-road, on-line communities and other non affiliated and social groups. Collectively we have a greater voice with which to participate in the decision making process regarding mountain bike riding. Forming a BUG is the way to achieve this.

The concept of forming a Mountain BUG has the support of Bicycle Queensland (http://www.bq.org.au/) BQ is a member organisation of the Bicycle Coalition, along with Bicycle Victoria, Bicycle NSW and Bicycle South Australia. The Coalition represents almost 100,000 members from the peak cycling advocacy organisation of these respective states. BQ are supportive of this initiative to form a Mtn BUG and will help advise us as we grow.

The Mtn BUG also has received support from IMBA Australia (http://imba-au.com/) IMBA Australia’s objectives are to advocate for access, to gain recognition as the authority on all aspects of MTB trail management and to become the pre-eminent source of professional advice. Initial conversations with IMBA-Au have been very positive and they are keen to see the formation of this group.

We need one more thing YOU! We are aiming to represent the mountain bike riders of South East Queensland. We need to hear from you.

You can get in touch with us via MtnBug@hotmail.com Please provide your contact details so we can get in touch with you! More details will be forthcoming as they solidify.

Happy Trails the Mtn BUG.

Specific Campaigns

1. Save Mt Tambourine Downhill Track!
2. Advocate for the provision of a variety of mountain bike opportunities in a range of settings across SEQ
3. Lobby for access to Local Government land on vehicle management trails (multi-use trails) to be open unless there is a compelling evidence based reason not to.

Action Alert:

Mt Tamborine Downhill Track Closure

The long standing downhill track located off Knoll Road at Mt Tamborine has been closed by the land managers. It is very disappointing that no attempt was made to engage the mountain bike community before this decision was made.

Call To Action:
As a response to this action and other local access issues, mountain bike riders from across SEQ are forming a representative group to lobby for mountain bike access. Our first campaign will be to re-instate access to the Mt Tamborine Downhill. We will be forming a bicycle user group or a BUG the Mountain BUG.

We are in the process of arranging a venue to host our first meeting. The idea will be for those interested in joining the campaign as well as those looking to form the BUG to attend. If you are interested in the future of mountain bike riding is SEQ then get in contact with us MtnBug@hotmail.com

Background Information.

The Tamborine Downhill track between Knoll Road and Mt Tamborine Road has been in existence for well over a decade. The trail has been a training ground for national and international champions as well as a regional recreational venue for riders from across South East Queensland. If we lose this venue it will result in increased pressure on other un-official venues or result in the creation of new illegal trails in untouched areas.

The increasing popularity of this venue due to other un-official venues being closed and the population growth in SEQ has brought this to a head. Instead of knee jerk closures we need real solutions and legal venues to manage the recreation demand.

It’s time to take a stand.[/CENTER]

A very well thought out and structured action plan!! I have taken the liberty of emailing your post to the Gold Coast MTB Club committee members for discussion at our monthly meeting next Tuesday evening. I am confident you will receive the full support of our club. Well done

Hey Deadman,

If you want to educate some of the locals up here, and get them onside, there are 2 weekly free papers that get dropped into everyones letterboxes.

One is called "The Tamborine Times"
the other is called "Tamborine News"

They both have letters to the editors, and the locals use these papers to have a right old winge about most things.

Maybe you could submit a full story with some pictures, explaining what has happened, why it happened, what you will be trying to do etc.

Just a thought.

This is a good idea Kingswood. We definately need to communicate with the locals. How many locals other than you would be downhillers?

Me and another 3 local guys that I ride with.
Including Zac Buckley who is doing very well in under 19's.

It's pretty well documented in vids that Kovarik and Rennie have done a lot of training at the dump run.
If you wanted to talk about the local economy, you could run of some numbers of visitors in a weekend. The strip of shops in North Tamborine have most probably benefited.

The Rennie interview in TIA was shot in a local cafe in North Tamborine, that’s a former world cup champion sitting in a local cafe and training on the mountain. Don’t councillors love that kind of exposure?

Good Stuff Kingswood

We have to cover all bases. Although there will be preperation going on in the background, the important thing in the short term is support.

Stage 1 - Be part of the Mountain BUG. It needs numbers - 1,000's. Politicians listen to voters. The larger the number of voters they can get on side, the more cooperative they become! All Mountain bikers need to become a Mtn BUG not just Downhillers.

Stage 2 - Members give Mtn BUG clout. They underpin the 'Re-instate the Dump Run campaign', the more members the more powerful the campaign will be. Members do not necessarilly have to do anything apart from submitting their name, address and contact details. Obviously, input and feedback is a welcome bonus.

Stage 3 - A few of us work hard and smart with Mtn BUG behind us, the planets have to align and when the campaign is successful, the fun begins - trail design, trail work and riding and more riding.....and more riding...........and more riding

Cheers, Dave

I have to say I agree with you on this, as being one of the most important starting steps.

These local papers tend to be used as a soapbox by the more vocal community members on issues they see as important. So there's a good chance that there has been discussion of the Dump Run track in one or both of these publications already (correct me if I'm wrong Kingswood).

If we can show to those that oppose the trail through a proactive and intelligent piece that we are not all degenerates, then I think that would be a major battle won (potentially one that could mean going higher up to local government is not necessary to get the trail reopened).

On a side note, I think thanks to Dave/Deadman are in order from everyone on here, as well as the mtb community in general. Everything you post is well worded and diplomatic, and it's clear you've got some experience in lobbying behind you. Hats off to you, good sir.
