Whisky!

Oban 14...

This is a fantastic Highland drink. It is really smooth, slightly sweet, complex array of flavours that evolve, and a slight hint of peat. Despite the higher alcohol % it's still smooth and not at all polish like in favour or aroma.

Never had BenRiach before. Won't buy it again either. I think it's going to sit in the liquor cabinet for a long time with one drink out of it.

Some recent adventures...

At $400 a bottle and a lot of hype I was expecting big things. Guess what? I was underwhelmed, massively underwhelmed. This is a nice enough whisk(E)y and it certainly has a bit of champagne flavour in the finish. But it doesn't explode with the kind of flavour I expect at this price point. It tasted like a base Speyside. For me this tasted like a $100 bottle of booze.

This was quite nice, but again...at that price? I have the 12 year old version in my house and it is as nice to drink and a lot less to buy. After 15 years and all that oak I was expecting complexity.

So 2 recent whisk(E)y adventures that were underwhelming.

I also picked up this interesting number:

This blended whisk(E)y is quite nice. It's a mix of Scotch (I'm guessing Speyside) and Bourbon. Neither overpowers the other, the flavour is balanced and a little sweet. It's very easy to drink and may even cocktail well (experiments to come).

The Glenlivet 18 is better than those two, and the Chivas Royal Salute is like an alien from a more refined and delicious galaxy.

Glenfarclas 15 remains my Speyside benchmark. With all the hype around the Grand Cru...I was hoping to experience something that blew my mouth apart.

This isn't too bad, is quite often on special for $50 at Coles
