Inter Winter XC Series

Best 3hr race ever!!!
Definitely not the muddiest race I've ever participated in, but it certainly did remind me how much I hate mud. New chain for certain, I think I'm in the lucky group and got off light.
I couldn't believe how much weight the bike shed when you rolled through those large puddles at the top fire-trail, the bike would instantly zoom forward with the reduced weight.
I was certainly tip-toeing around in the mud trying to not end up face-first in a tree, max speed on lap 3: 16km/h. I've had no working front derailleur for the last couple of week (really must get around to fixing that) so anything >200W in the mud in middle ring just meant wheelspin, and middle ring was all I had all race :(
Oh, how I'd have liked to be able to spin up some of those slippery sections. But the track was certainly a lot more rideable at the end of the race.

The weather made it a little bit damp, for sure, but no way could it dampen the incredible job you guys did of organising the event. It was absolutely spot-on. You really did an excellent job indeed, and you deserve massive congratulations for your achievement.

Well done!

Was nicely organised, track would have been stupidly fast in the dry but as it was I still had more than enough fun. Will be back next time for sure, hopefully for a little less drift action.

Edit: Results are up:)

Results available on Ballarat-Sebastopol website

Thanks to all riders who braved the mud and drizzle today. We had 153 competitors which shows that MTB riders are a tough breed and will race in anything (I'd like to see roadies race in those conditions).

From the feedback we recieved today, it sounded like a tough but memorable race. We look forward to inviting you back when the course is fast and dry.

Results and splits below:

Images should be available in the next 2 hours or so - they are currently uploading to the web site but speed is worse than Tim's Lap 2 speed :(

http://www.mtb-images.com.au

For those that are interested - GPS co-ordinates are available for each photo when you click on the thumbnail so you can see eaxctly where the image was taken.

If you think the track was slippery - you should have tried walking beside it - slippery as!

Was a great race and fantastic course. Excellent job from the organisers. First visit to Ballarat and I'll definitely be back out there soon. I'd imagine it would be quite a quick circuit in the dry.

Also the first time my chain has been kept together with three!!! power links. Chain snapped twice on laps two and three (in separate places)- each time I dropped the spare link in the mud- finding them was fun!

yes the rain sucked, the crazy dog lady who ripped up the track only yesterday and necessitated other track changes due to dumping ASBESTOS! on the trail. It got a bit muddy, people's crossmark tyres got a bit clogged. But did you enjoy the race, the course, the assistance from DSE, the volunteer paramedics, the schoolkids bbq?

please comment here but please please write to the editor of Ballarat's newspaper. www.thecourier.com.au

thanks to all again for coming out in the rain and making a great race!
I'd be interested to hear any feedback you get from DSE.

Castlemaine - Return of the Pinies

Lots happening in the Rocky World!

INTERWINTER WORKING BEE

Help fine tune the track this Sunday, 27th June from 2-4pm. Meet opposite the gun club on Colles Road. Bring rakes, rakehoes, boots and gloves

INTERWINTER RACE #3 – CASTLEMAINE – 4 July 2010

Racing returns to the Pineys, one of Victoria’s original and classic Olympic XC venues…. so, we are putting on an Olympic XC race! And to keep you nice and warm pre-post and for spectators during the event, Espresso Events will be onsite serving locally roasted Coffee Basics coffee and other goodies… so no excuses!

Rego: 8.30 – 9.45am

Dirtmaster Race (Under 13s – See details below) – 10am Seniors Racing (A/B/C): 10.30

Where: Moonlight Flat Pine Plantation – Colles Road Castlemaine, Opposite the Gun Club. Signs will be up from the Pyrenes Highway.

Entry: Online entries are now open at Entry Zone $25/rider or $90 for the whole series (4 events). On the day entries will cost you $5 extra. Under 13s – $5 (enter on day). MTBA license at $15 for all non-MTBA members.

Track Details: A 7.5 km loop of the pineys, incorporating 80+% Single Track. The terrain is quite rocky in places, so appropriate tyre choice and pressure is essential. The track has held up really well following the recent rain, with barely a puddle on it. Course features lots of switch back climbs, fun decents and some technical sections, which will be signposted and appropriate B-lines will be available. Estimated lap time for A grade is 25-30 minutes. Following MTBA XCO guidelines, we expect 4 laps for A-grade (30km, 2 hours), 3 laps for B-Grade (22.5km 1.45 hrs) and 2 laps for C-Grade (15km 1.30hrs).

Under 13s Dirtmaster Race – Kids race will be on a modified 1km circuit. While not overly technical, it is a mountainbike trail so some mountain bike experience is required. Prior to the race, senior club members will escort riders on a “sighting” lap to ensure rider suitability and familiarisation with the course. The competition will be “enduro” format, with the most number of laps in 20 minutes being the winner. This format is consistent with MTBA draft policy for 10-12 year olds, which states:

· Maximum of 1 race per week of duration between 15-25 minutes

· Genders are not separated

· Club level competition only – either intra-club or inter-club

As it is a race, MTBA competitition day licenses for non-mtba members will be required to ensure appropriate insurance coverage – $15 available on the day. Alternatively, annual Dirtmaster memberships (under 13s) will be available for sale on the day at only $35 which covers riders for a full 12 months – this is great value.

Unfortunatlly i only got round half a lap with 2 mechanicals.. not happy about that. course was pretty cool, well from the small amount that i saw. Maxxis Rendez on the front worked well in the conditions, only problem was they shed mud too well and it ended up straight on the rider :p
Smoothly run and great food put on by the school!
See you all at Castlemaine! Hopefully for a great (dry) race.
