Has anyone asked the OP whether the cranks ACTUALLY need to be seperated from the pedal?

I am the OP I dont recall being asked as i have been off the forum since yesterday morning
So the answer is yes the pedal needs removing from the crank as the pedal is broken and i have a new pedal ready to fit!

I think I created a monster with this thread but its an entertaining one so keep up with the suggestions!

now now! cotter pin cranks get a hard enough time as is with out you, they are fine to work with, untill you want to use them on a bike or ride them, or put them on, or take them off or look at them or breath on them or imagine they're there

I'm afraid what we have here is a serious case of "pedal wind-up". This happens when the pedal has been rotated too many times and bearing run out of roll. The solution here is to undo the pedal rotations that have been incurred. The fastest way to do this it to get a portable drill and tighten the chuck around the pedal (if the pedal is too big, ie something that isn't an eggbeater, you may have to borrow the LBS's 'pedal-drill-adapter'; they will have a set of ten or so for different pedals) and pull the trigger. It is a slow process though, it takes 5-8 hours to undo a couple of years worth of pedalling.
