What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

First bearing replacement in 6 years. And a couple were surprisingly not shit…

What puller set did you go with?
The Ztto one. It’s primarily aimed at doing hubs and free hub bodies etc, and was actually a pain in the arse to use for this job. Would have been better off with a more generic set.

Done a thing today, Cascade link installed. A bit of a headache with a slight misalignment in the link mounting points to the swingarm, a bit of judicious prying with a flat blade screwdriver allowed me to get the thread started in the last bolt.

I had left the others loose but there wasn't enough float in the whole assembly for me to push it into alignment by hand. Didn't mar any of the surfaces with the screwdriver (that I could see) as it didn't take much force. Will see next time I take it apart, which will be a while because I gave all the bushings a clean and lube while I was at it.

I bought a Norbar torque wrench a few years ago, for mechanicking expensive bike stuff. Half the Ripmo's linkage bolts are inaccessible to it so I reverted to old school doing it by feel.

the Cascade link is about 5mm shorter between the bearings. Plenty of grit collected around the bearing recesses despite the low KMs it's done. All clean now and the bearings seem ok but not super smooth.

Shakedown ride for the Trance following a dropper service, major shock service and all new suspension bearings.

Inner gear cable I used sucks, so I’ll need to change that again. I think it’s too thick or stiff, but on the GX rear mech it’s holding the mech back from down shifting easily. Or something…

But damn she rides sooooo much better. Long term incremental dropping off in performance sneaks up and you only realise how bad it had gotten when it’s fixed!!

Also shouted out “thanks guys!!” to the blokes from Clarence council with the chainsaws sorting out all the fallen trees across the trails!

Not today, last Sunday...I went for a bit of a spin around town with one of my mates and his boys. I'd been out to the dirt jumps a bit earlier and was feeling pretty good on the bike. A little rain had come during the day but everything seemed pretty dry as we ripped skids and bounced stairs.

We get to one of my favourite street riding features, the sculpture wall ride. I check the ground for excess moisture and it seems pretty good. I charge in, pop up onto the steel, and whoooooosh! Tyre slips (marked by the x) straight put and the bike follows. I foot plant the wall and vault off in an effort to get out of slaming onto the bike, but as you can see from my foot print (marked by the arrow) my big (well roughly) dragged the full slide. I came forward and you can see my hand print (also marked with am arrow) as well. I did manage a surprisingly injury free landing where the bike and I came down in different spots, aided by me performing a neat shoulder roll away from the pointy bits.

Lots of laughs! Sadly no footage. It would have been excellent.

Here is a very old photo of me doing this without issue. The tree is long dead.

Went for a quick ride to have a feel of the Cascade link in my Ripmo AF, I'm terrible at comprehending the nuances of suspension so I put the same pressure, volume spacers ànd rebound as before. The idea being that the link was the only change. Definitely feels more willing to get the wheels off the ground and rides higher in the travel, much less feeling of imminent pedal strike.
