Wanted to do a last ride of the holidays with my daughter before she starts Kindy, but It was cut short by a loose dog on the local trail.... some kind of staffy X mental case breed that lives a few doors down from us in a hoarders place. It had just killed a someone else’s pet. So we went home pumped the tyres and rode the streets to the local school for a play.

Washed it. Embarrassingly it's first wash since I built it. In my defence it's been 1000kms of dusty trails rather than mud and muck.

Mine's only been washed twice in 6,500k. Wipe the dust off and it's good to go!

I joined in with the local Club's social ride this morning. Had a freaking blast chasing the A-graders. It's comforting to know I've got the skills and horsepower to go with them, just need to work on the endurance to stay there. It also felt good pushing the bike to the limits it was designed for.

Might even make it for a race in a couple of weeks.

WTF? Did you try to catch it or call the council? Or was someone else already dealing with it?

That's fucked... We have a few mental case dogs owned by trashy mental cases in our area, and I fear one day one of our small dogs will be killed or hurt. Hopefully your area is a bit better at dealing with dangerous dogs than Canberra is....

Definitely do some races this year! I started last year and learnt a ton.

I'm back full-time on the trainer (5 days a week) building for this coming year hoping to make it my best yet. My biggest limiter was maintaining that high level of pace over a full race distance too. If it was a lapped course my best lap would be similar to the fastest but they were obviously pacing better (read: they were fitter) as they could maintain it for 6hrs while I was a couple of minutes per lap slower towards the end.

Might see you out there

Whats the training regime?

Well, couple of days ago, Alpine Classic at Bright. Pretty uneventful day for me (just 1 flat). As for the other 3 I went with, 1 ended up in hospital. He crashed coming down Mt Hotham the day before the event. Another got hypothermia (car ride back from top of Hotham). The other had 3 flats, with the last one his tyre exploded and got a lift back from Towanga gap.

I used trainerroad last year so I'm using it again this year. Their usual training regimes are 28 weeks long (12 weeks of base training, 8 weeks build training then 8 weeks of speciality)

So at the moment I'm in the thick of base training which is mostly sweetspot intervals (95% of FTP). Then you can pick your build training depending on how you want to race. Short power (punchy), sustained (think of time trials, super long climbs etc) and general build. Last year I did short power as mountain biking is in general, very spiky.

Then speciality phase is like icing the cake. I'll do the MTB marathon plan at this stage but last year I did the XC Olympic plan which is designed for 1-1.5 hr punchy races.

Overall it's a very effective tool if you want to get faster. I usually have the TV on and depending on the workout, watch a MTB race with some music or Netflix depending on the intensity.

Big day on the bike! Nice work

Stucks about all the other incidents though

Do you use a power meter? I'm sorta trying to avoid that expense while also knowing it's the most effective way

I use a powermeter (Stages) on the bike which trainerroad uses to control my smart trainer (Tacx Flux). The trainer has its own built in powermeter but every one is a little different so I want to train with the device I'm using outdoors too.

You can get all the benifits of training with power by using trainerroad virtual power algorithms and a dumb trainer. You just need a cadence sensor and a trainer. You'll do an FTP test as per normal and then you can train with the same effectiveness as using a real powermeter. The only caveat is that that power figure it spits out can only be compared to that trainer and bike combination and not someone else's numbers that uses an actual powermeter.

If you do get a powermeter in the future you'll just retest and then train using that number. And now you can compare your numbers with pros and realise how insane their numbers are

There are bargains to be had every now and again with powermeters. I got mine off here for around $400 from memory which was a full XTR crank set with powermeter. Worth checking out those FB sale pages every now and again

Any advice on what I should be asking for my wife's Knolly Endorphin? She's due for a NBD and this has always been a bit aggressive for her. It's done about 400kms in the last 4 years.

Small 26" frame with DB air shock
Pike 150mm
Carbon wheels
Gx 11spd with Race Face cranks
Carbon bars, dropper post etc

Would happily part it out if someone wanted the frame

Serves them right for even contemplating the Alpine Classic (not the guy who crashed on the way down, that sucks big time). Feckin' Weirdos, the lot of you!
