What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

Yeah I know what you mean.
I love making stuff outta scrap because it's more of a challenge and it reuses.
But it ain't pretty.

I had planned to paint it right away.... but now that it's holding the bike up motivation is fading.

I really like it, maybe a powdercoat or coat of black paint and it will look like something you bought.

I do it all the time, you just got to have the eye to sort out the steel you need.

The legs are old exhaust pipe, the rubber ends are radiator hose and the rest is off cuts. Made a truing stand from old junk also.

Do they dampen as well as the carbon bars ?
It’s hard to know what’s placebo and what’s real. But yes I think they work and I think I can feel the steering being more precise.

Not an ideal blind test though as I rectified some poor rebound settings as well. But - so far so good!

It’s nice not having that annoying little “what if” about the carbon bars in the back of my head though....

I had the first ride on my bike for a while. The temporary wheels turned up during the week and I had to change the front rubber to something more substantial.

They're a Novatec / wtb i25 wheel set from cyclingdeal. Good value. A little narrower than I would ideally go with, but they're good for spares.

The Continental tyres they came with are pretty thin and squirmy on the rear, but better than me keeping on borrowing bikes...

Put a 60mm stem on as well, which I liked. The 800mm did feel a little wide today, but I was coming off a loaner bike with 760mm bars which are much to narrow. I'll give the 800 a few more rides before chopping or not.

Went out to Majura and there was a race on.....

So, stopped by Bruce Ridge on way home so it wasn’t a complete loss. Couple of laps, but then it was getting too hot.

Pretty sure that’s what came specced on my Kona. I’ve seen others swap out the hubs for Hope ones, but mine have been fine so far.

WTF? Did you try to catch it or call the council? Or was someone else already dealing with it?

That's fucked... We have a few mental case dogs owned by trashy mental cases in our area, and I fear one day one of our small dogs will be killed or hurt. Hopefully your area is a bit better at dealing with dangerous dogs than Canberra is....
Already being dealt with. Owners came back to get it. There’s a bunch of useless dog owners around here though. Council had 2 turned over to be put down by owners who kept having them repeatedly escape. They kept arguing with people that they were harmless etc etc. until they went on a blood letting and killed a few other neighbors cats, some guinea pigs and a couple of chooks. Finally came to the realization they couldn’t actually care for these dogs while working full time and that they were quite aggressive when loose.

That was meant to be i25, not 35. The hubs I found pretty good. Much better engagement than the stock SRAM wheels that came on my Kona Process 153. These Novatec have 5 pawls on board.

I have killed some of the pawls before on a different set, but these newer ones are supposedly somehow hardened, so time will tell how they go.

Ah right, thought you might be in the 2.8-3 inch tyre crowd haha.

I've killed Novatec pawls before too (not on Kona though), but I did get replacement under warranty. Not actually sure of the model that are on the i35s I've got - it was just the standard wheels with the 2016 153 DL

Ok, this has the potential to land me square in the fuckwits thread. But I remember from my Canfield ownership days of people buying boost wheels for future proofing and installing them to their Riot's with a longer axle. The company said this was perfectly fine so plenty of people did it.

Thought I'd chuck a boost hub/wheel in the back of my Czar just to see how much effort it actually takes. Turns out, it almost slips right in without much effort at all. Like, if you pushed the frame into the hub it slips in without needing to manually pry it at all. The axle goes back in but needs to be a touch longer for safety. The brake rotor lines right up with the caliper and the rim is perfectly centred in between the rear triangle.

I've emailed Turner just to quiz him on it. I'm sure I'll get the usual "we don't recommend anything outside of factory hub spacings". But who knows. I've got a fancy set of DT Swiss carbon xc wheels on my Primer that just aren't getting used so the temptation is there

Plus, I've already found an axle that'll work...

Had a great late arvo/early evening ride at the Youies with The Boy. Haven't done Stockyards for a while. Smashed some PRs, did some little jumps, and just had a jolly old time in general.

I've finally got the Sight set up how I like it again*, after hating the way it felt for the last couple of rides. Reminded me of why I fell in love with it to begin with. It also saved me from what could have been a nasty crash when I came in way too hot on that bit of embankment next to the road leading from the gate where they keep the stuff to the shed at the bottom of Cressy. The darker coloured one, not the one right next to the gate.

* the suspension could be a tad more plush, but it's hard to get it just right with the amount of weight I've been losing lately
