BIKE RACKS AND CARRIERS FOR CARS MEGATHREAD - all questions asked and answered here

Finally. Lamborghini have released roof racks so you can fit a rack. At least you won't need a milkcrate for this one. Although still waiting for a price on the 50 mm receiver hitch kit from dealer.

What's the most economical way to replace the bungees on a shingleback vertical rack?
Picked one up at a reasonable price but missing 2 bungees.
Bunnings generic bungee cord?
I believe genuine are around $15ea?

A marine chandlery store will stock good quality shock cord that you'll be able to buy by the metre.

Anyone have a JB Rack? Looking at their 4 x vertical rack with the 16" - 20" wheel adaptor for the kids bikes.
I've been using one for a little while, maybe half a dozen trips with it loaded with 1 to 4 bikes.

There's a bit of bounce but I'm not sure if that's any more than other racks. The hoops seem a bit shallow but haven't caused any issues with the 29 and 700c wheels I have.

Had to nip up the bolts last weekend but otherwise seems okay. Definitely thinner wall steel than other options I've seen, can't comment on durability, but it can be managed in a 1 person lift which is good.

Looking to get a roof bike rack. Between the Yakima Highroad and Rockymounts Brassknuckles, anyone has any experience with either one ?
The Brassknuckles seems to be a bit more sturdy, I've had the frontloader before but sold it after reading that some has failed.

I've had both the Frontloader and the HighRoad.

Never had any issues with the Frontloader except abrasion from the rear wheel holder causes a lot of surface rust which can get unsightly.

After getting a heavier bike and seeing the Highroad, I replaced both carriers with Highroads.

They are much more sturdy and easy to use. Their design also leads to less overhang over the rear, if you have a sedan or smaller car. The cable lock system is also much better.

Yakima Highroad
This is probably the best rack of that sort you can get. I've also had highroad and frontloader, never had issues with either.

I would say that a full hoop front wheel holder is aways going to be more sturdy than a half, but either is fine. The Weakness is going to be side to side sway which is more to do with the rack to roof bar attachment than the wheel. Both are equal in this department.

Also depends on how you plan to use it. For me the yakima was very easy to put on and off cars.

Someone's selling two almost new looking Frontloaders for $250 here - my aim is to buy a set of tray bars that slot into the roller cover grooves so I can transport bikes (or a basket) and carry crap in the tray, leaving the towbar free.

I've ended up with Rhino Rack Hybrid which is almost the same as Rockymount Brassknuckles which was cheaper than both the rockymount branded and the Yakima Highroad, but the Rhino branded also comes with the lock cores.
The rhino/brassknuckles sits lower one roof rack, handy when I put it on my SUV for extra clearance in shopping mall car parks. The reviews I've read and watched rate both racks highly.

BTW rockymounts are now owned by rhino-rack

I am about to buy a new car. Likely something quick such as a Subaru WRX or Golf R.

My Amarok is just too big.

I am after a reliable bike transport option for two bikes at least. Cost is not much issue.

Neither car has a tow bar option, i have a GripSport two bike rack 50mm hitch currently. It is for a standard road bike and my Intense SS2 which has 20mm thru axle on the fork.

Rear hatch based options are not going to be considered, the ones that wedge or strap on - no way.

I have come across Ecohitch from the USA for WRX - anybody use them? If it fits new model I reckon thats a great option.

Other than roof racks, is there any other options? I do have two roof rack holders with adapters as needed.

The performance variants of the BYD Seal and Sealion 7 can have a hitch. Ioniq 5N also has a hitch.

Before you give me some guff about not being fast enough, I assure you that any of those cars would easily demolish a WRX or Golf.

If it must be ICE then a Hyundai i30N can also have a hitch.
