BIKE RACKS AND CARRIERS FOR CARS MEGATHREAD - all questions asked and answered here

What's the most economical way to replace the bungees on a shingleback vertical rack?
Picked one up at a reasonable price but missing 2 bungees.
Bunnings generic bungee cord?
I believe genuine are around $15ea?
A marine chandlery store will stock good quality shock cord that you'll be able to buy by the metre.

Anyone have a JB Rack? Looking at their 4 x vertical rack with the 16" - 20" wheel adaptor for the kids bikes.
I've been using one for a little while, maybe half a dozen trips with it loaded with 1 to 4 bikes.

There's a bit of bounce but I'm not sure if that's any more than other racks. The hoops seem a bit shallow but haven't caused any issues with the 29 and 700c wheels I have.

Had to nip up the bolts last weekend but otherwise seems okay. Definitely thinner wall steel than other options I've seen, can't comment on durability, but it can be managed in a 1 person lift which is good.

Looking to get a roof bike rack. Between the Yakima Highroad and Rockymounts Brassknuckles, anyone has any experience with either one ?
The Brassknuckles seems to be a bit more sturdy, I've had the frontloader before but sold it after reading that some has failed.

I've had both the Frontloader and the HighRoad.

Never had any issues with the Frontloader except abrasion from the rear wheel holder causes a lot of surface rust which can get unsightly.

After getting a heavier bike and seeing the Highroad, I replaced both carriers with Highroads.

They are much more sturdy and easy to use. Their design also leads to less overhang over the rear, if you have a sedan or smaller car. The cable lock system is also much better.

Yakima Highroad
This is probably the best rack of that sort you can get. I've also had highroad and frontloader, never had issues with either.

I would say that a full hoop front wheel holder is aways going to be more sturdy than a half, but either is fine. The Weakness is going to be side to side sway which is more to do with the rack to roof bar attachment than the wheel. Both are equal in this department.

Also depends on how you plan to use it. For me the yakima was very easy to put on and off cars.

Someone's selling two almost new looking Frontloaders for $250 here - my aim is to buy a set of tray bars that slot into the roller cover grooves so I can transport bikes (or a basket) and carry crap in the tray, leaving the towbar free.

I've ended up with Rhino Rack Hybrid which is almost the same as Rockymount Brassknuckles which was cheaper than both the rockymount branded and the Yakima Highroad, but the Rhino branded also comes with the lock cores.
The rhino/brassknuckles sits lower one roof rack, handy when I put it on my SUV for extra clearance in shopping mall car parks. The reviews I've read and watched rate both racks highly.

BTW rockymounts are now owned by rhino-rack

I am about to buy a new car. Likely something quick such as a Subaru WRX or Golf R.

My Amarok is just too big.

I am after a reliable bike transport option for two bikes at least. Cost is not much issue.

Neither car has a tow bar option, i have a GripSport two bike rack 50mm hitch currently. It is for a standard road bike and my Intense SS2 which has 20mm thru axle on the fork.

Rear hatch based options are not going to be considered, the ones that wedge or strap on - no way.

I have come across Ecohitch from the USA for WRX - anybody use them? If it fits new model I reckon thats a great option.

Other than roof racks, is there any other options? I do have two roof rack holders with adapters as needed.

The performance variants of the BYD Seal and Sealion 7 can have a hitch. Ioniq 5N also has a hitch.

Before you give me some guff about not being fast enough, I assure you that any of those cars would easily demolish a WRX or Golf.

If it must be ICE then a Hyundai i30N can also have a hitch.

@scblack - as an option have a look at a late Mini Countryman or bmw 123 thing - can fit a towbar ‘ euro dog dick style ‘
but if you get a new wrx - give us an update .
I currently have a countryman , ( after selling my ss ute ) prob not a agricultural ..but is much more economical hahha
and yes it’s the all 4 , 400nm job - I like it hahah

i have a hidden hitch for the Mazda MPS. It is rated as a class 1 rack so only good for bike racks and other lighter weight things. Not for a caravan or you will be seeing it from a distance in your rear view mirror. :)

I like that it is tucked away. You can remove the receiver so you don't have a towball visible all of the time.

Although I usually end up taking Mrs Jimny which deals with roads to trailheads much better than a lower car.

The rust is a problem with the Frontloader because it's steel and not aluminium. My rear wheel holder can no longer slide back and forth because of it. I need to replace the tray. Because of this I'm looking at replacing it with a Thule Proride or similar (the Upride is a bit expensive) but I don't really like the frame attachment. Is the Rocky Mount Tomahawk or Brass Knuckles steel or aluminium?

Just putting it out there that I was in the hunt for a vertical rack recently and picked up a Velocirax 4-bike rack. Very impressed with the anti-wobble mechanism and rest of the rack is sturdy and well made. Pretty impressed for the price ($1200).

Okay I just bought a new used car so I can take my bike out. It already had a towbar on it with a locking pin but no keys so I had to drill it out. I then looked up the manufacturer which rates it at 1800/180kg towing capacity and for whatever reason clicked on the faqs page where there's a question that says "Can I use a bike carrier?" and it says the following:
"BTA Towing Equipment manufactures towbars & hitches specifically for the purpose of towing. We do not recommend the use nor do we warranty our products for use with bike carriers due to the torsional stress applied to the tongue by the bike carrier and suspended load exceeding design specifications."

I have never ever heard of this or would expect it. Is this normal? Would you still do it? (I am using just a carrier with 1 ebike)
