BIKE RACKS AND CARRIERS FOR CARS MEGATHREAD - all questions asked and answered here

Australian Market maybe too small?

I reckon its the mainstream brands like Thule, Yakima etc... cater for those who think they need to be 100% legal with no grey area. Therefore nothing coming back on them with a rack that may possibly attract attention from the law.

The others like ISI, Singletrail, Shingleback, SpotX have realised the extra cost of lights and getting them engineered in so they are legal when carrying 4-6 bikes is a headache and most buyers of these racks don't care.

Spot X used to have lights then done away with them.

I also bought the same light bar from pushys and one point to note is that the side lights that illuminate the number plate don't protrude too much. What this means is that ideally you want the plate to sit flush with the backing as much as you can or it won't be lit. I only found out after I devised a setup that could easily interchange plates but then realised the light didn't work!

Other than that thing seems simple enough and works a treat.
Here’s some images of mounted but we just picked a new car yesterday so got to get a new number plate now.

Scored a ISI bike carrier on Marketplace for a pretty reasonable price. I wanted a vertical rack but this is a Govt vehicle and the ISI was the only tray or vertical rack that came close to meeting the overhang rules in NSW.

Very happy with the rack, less happy with the Yakima light board fitted to it. Is it worth posting a review on either?

Definitely worth posting a review on both.

I have a Thule light board and rate them. But the Thule uses a round euro plug and I have a Discovery 4 so it's a straight fit.

Is that the entity rack from bicycles online? I'm tossing up that rack vs the actual rocky mounts one. Doesn't seem to be a huge difference, maybe the front wheel mechanism. Rate it and have you had any issues?
I got mine off marketplace and it looks the same just a different brand, I think one company mass produces them then puts stickers for that company, mines the DK2 brand which looks to be from Costco. I rate it pretty good probably only two things, one was mounting the number plate where I just did as above using this
https://bikebug.com/rockymounts-led-licence-plate-holder.html
The only other thing is the lever it has to tilt it, it works but mine’s just a bit stiff, I just haven’t got around to looking at it. As the bloke I got it off had it outside, so might need a bit of spray or a tweak, definitely not a deal breaker. If you look through google you might find some even cheaper but when I was looking it was MTB direct who was the cheapest but you might find one cheaper, I will try and find one I saw online at a Bayswater store.
Just thought of one other thing and I think Rockmounts would have the same problem, there was no way to lock the bike up. What I did with mine was drill a hole in the wheel holder rail just above where it stops for my wheel and got a padlock as below, I use it when I might need to leave it unattended
it’s more to deter someone who sees an opportunity, if someone’s out to steal it no lock will stop them.
The arm’s that hold the wheel are good made from aluminium and hold it firmly in place, drove to Yackandandah with no issues, no different to the roof rack style of arms been down dirt roads and even hit a speed bump to quick, rack bounced around a bit, but no issues.

Has anyone bought any new roof rack bike carriers lately?
Currently got the Yakima Frontloader, looking to add another rack to carry the jump bike, but does anyone have the high road?

Had the high road and front loader before going hitch rack. Basically the same as the frontloader, just more sleek looking, more aero, less noisy. Everything else is more or less the same.

Highroad marginally faster to load, has a clutch on the wheel to tighten rather than just cranking it down. Highroad won't take anything under 26" so no good for kids bikes if that's applicable. Highroad can also use rail screws instead of straps to mount but costs extra to do so.

Made this over the last few weeks. CNC plasma cutter FTW
Due to RAV 4 barn door had to make it hinged at bottom. looks cleaner and lighter than original swing out idea i started on.
Just need to make a mount for tiny # plate, weld lower cross piece, move a couple of the hooks and paint.

Planning to get a rack on a few months but this popped up in my socials today. Aus company in QLD. Sale on and looks to be a decent rack by the photos. Has tilt function and powder coated. Only 1 year warranty. Price is right though.
